Fuel pump prime wire safe to use for driving?
Wondering if its ok to use the fuel pump prime wire as a means of running the car?
reason i ask is because im getting rid of my oil pressure sender/switch and putting in an autometer sender and gauge. I know that it is a backup for the fuel pump if the fuel pump relay fails. so im wanting to make a wire that i could connect from my battery directly to the fuel pump prime wire in case the relay does fail. but i am unsure if this is a good idea to run the car like this to get it home in case of a break down. what are some cons of doing this? also would it be wise to put an in-line fuse on the wire? I would just hate to have a relay failure be the cause of me sitting on the side of the road in the future, just cause i wanted an aftermarket oil pressure gauge.
Any opinions are welcome. I've already thought about putting the sender in other places, the one next to the distributor, it won't fit. the one by the timing chain cover, i just don't want it there. so im pretty set on putting it in place of the stock sender.

Where is your sensor located and how many wires does it have?

Are you speaking of the sensor by the oil filter or in the driver side head?? The sensor by the oil filter is the oil pressure switch and the sensor in the bottom of the driver side head by the spark plugs is the oil pressure sending unit (gauges)...that was my understanding, i may be wrong though.

its the sensor by the oil filter, its the later style with the sender and switch in one unit. it has 3 wires, 1 for the gauge and the other 2 are jumpered together when there is oil pressure to send power to the pump.
it won't fit beside the distributor because there is to much stuff in the way, even if i could get it in, i don't think i could fit a wrench back there to tighten it down. im running the super ram intake btw.
Its not a problem that i am bypassing the stock switch, thats why im asking about fuel pump prime wire, its right on top of the passenger strut tower, and i'd figure i'd make a wire about 2 feet long with an inline fuse (maybe) one end with a male tab to hook to the wire, and the other end with an aligator teeth clip to put on the (+)battery. i'd keep it in my hatch storage just in case. any thoughts on this? downsides?

Why not just keep a spare fuel pump relay in the car instead?

that was another option i had factored in, but one thing about that is, what if something happens with the wiring before the fuel pump relay. the fuel pump prime wire bypasses the relay. so yes i would carry an extra relay with me, and the wire.
