worth getting custom tune
i was wondering would i benefit alot from a custom tune... my computer is trying to "fight" with my cam's idle and the computer is trying to make the idle as smooth as possible.. there is a guy i know that specializes in l98 tuning and i was wondering could he fix this.. here are my mods... my car sounded mean a week ago... here is a vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmAOjTj03yU
it sounded good.. but every since i gutted the cat is does not sound like that anymore it has more of a stockish idle..... could the tuner fix that problem..... i needed a upgraded computer tune so any replies would be helpful....

Hello fellow NCer!!!!!!!!!!!
How do you know your computer is fighting the cam? The car sounds great, and if it's running well, don't mess with it.
Could you maybe sqeeze some horses out of it with a tune? -sure, but if it's running well.....you've gotta make a choice. You've got enough mods to easily justify a tune, but again, you might not need it.
I have a ZZ4 cammed L98 with exhaust etc. etc. and my car ran great for years. I finally got a tune, and I still tinker and go back and forth between tunes, trying to see what I like about each tune in hopes of maybe getting a third "better" tune.
....if you've got a friend who's capable, I'd probably just go ahead and do it!

Re: worth getting custom tune
hey... i can tell because the cam starts to loop by the computer quickly tries to smoothen it out and raise the idle.... before with the un gutted cat the computer didnt fight the idle and it would sound mean..... it doesnt even sound like the video anymore.... we played with fuel pressure and i dont know where to set it at..... considering i have 24lbs injectors we set it at 40psi... is that too low... should i raise the pressure up.... also its running rich now because of all the modifications ne ways..... i just thought i would benefit from a tune.....

Re: worth getting custom tune
If your running all this on the stock tune, then you definetly should get a custom tune. Especially since you changed the injector sizes and deleted emission devices.

Re: worth getting custom tune
The biggest issue outside of performance is going to be the Cam and injectors. The computer may be able to compensate for the cam properly, but the new injectors are a constant, and it just won't know you've made a change unless you tell it.
All the other mods should be able to be handled by the computer. ...so yeah, due to injectors, and possibly the cam, a tune would be a good idea.
Now as for performance, yes, without a tune, you're leaving power on the table. A tune would certainly help. Not trying to be confusing, but I just like to point out the difference between needing a tune to gain more power, and needing a tune to make the car run properly.

Re: worth getting custom tune
yes im running all that on a stock tune.... and abubaca i understand what your saying... i want the tune mainly because i want the car to run properly and at its best but getting performance also from this tune would be a bonus... im more than satisfied with my power increase... this is my daily driver and i dont eva plan on racing it.... when i get this tune i just wanna see what it runs down the quarter mile and get a dyno sheet and thats pretty much all the racing its gonna see.... basically all i wanted is a nice mean sounding trans am thats a fun daily driver... i have achieved that... now all i need is to get this thing to run right and paint job and im done... the interior is already mint looks brand new..... the guy who is doing my tune said its gonna be 400 dollars.... he will use his laptop and place it on a dyno to tune the car.... burn a new chip for me.. he specializes in l98 tpi engines.... so do you think 400 is a good deal..... he lives in greensboro so its not really that far from raleigh.....

Re: worth getting custom tune
so what do you guys think i will be making to the wheels as far as horsepower and torque goes..... he said that he could probably get an extra 10hp from the dyno tune.. he said thats not counting the tune that will be doing on his laptop...
