Gas Tank Help
Looking to buy a new gas tank for my 92 GTA... want a simple in/out procedure(well not easy anyway), with no modification. Am on a budget, but i want a quality piece. ANY recommendations? I have a new Walbro 255 pump to go in, going to replace the sock, and i thought about replacing the whole sending unit too... THANKS IN ADVANCE

Re: Gas Tank Help
I just recently replaced my fuel pump and it was an experience I wouldn't wish on anybody. Fuel tanks are available for about $400 to $500 bucks from what I've seen so far. The fuel line assembly runs around $300 or better with the new sending unit and pump. I found several sources on line. Just do the Google search for "92 Z28 Camaro Fuel Tank" or what ever year you have.
If, I have to do this again I'll go that same route, new tank, new pump assembly and so on. My advice to you is, "get a bigger budget". If you just have a fuel pump replaced- that is dropping the tank and replacing the pump you're looking at about $1000. But that is a lot easier than doing it yourself.
I've read in these discussions that the Walbro makes some kind of noise as opposed to others in this forum so read on.

Re: Gas Tank Help
I'm doing the same thing to my 91 GTA. I'm sticking with the GM fuel pump because no other pump has proven that its good for over 100K. Walbro has a good rating but not a good warranty or haven't found one running in these cars with over or even close to 100K.
The sending units are the same from 89-92 on 305 TBI, 305 and 350 TPI cars and 90-92 3.1 cars.
I would also replace the pulsator(dampener) also.
I've read on this site about a 1LE pump-sending unit or strainer but I believe that is a myth because no manuals say anything about a ILE being any different.

Re: Gas Tank Help
Learn from my experiance. The only aftermarket tank made for our cars is the Spectra Preminum #GM2721B. The GM Goodmark tank is a Spectra with a black coating. I installed the Spectra tank and wound up pulling it for a used OEM tank I got from a board member. The Spectra is slightly oversized and is a bitch to get the straps tightened to hold it in place. Also the filler neck is not as sturdy as the OEM tank and bends down when you insert a gas pump nozzle in it,which led to it cracking and causing a leak. In other words,it is a POS! Find you a good used OEM tank and you will be much happier. I repeat,DONOT buy the Spectra! NAPA,Autozone, etc. all sell that tank because their is no other.
