Re: afr 180 heads
I would go with the 64cc (or is it 68cc?) chambers, the bigger ones are too big for a 350, it'll drop your CR too much.

Re: afr 180 heads
could i just buy 1.6 rockers.... i really like this cam and it works very well within my powerband.. love the idle of this cam too, very aggressive.. the afr heads work from idle to 5500 rpm according to their website which is excellent the my 2032 cam and hogged out tpi... with 1.6 rockers that would put me around 482/496 lift i believe..... with this combo could i see over 300whp and 12sec timeslips.....

Re: afr 180 heads
just wondering how much hp does afr 180 heads offer compared to the stock iron l98 heads.... would i see like 50 or more horsepower with these... and how much do you think it would cost me to do a head swap at some shop.... thanks.

Re: afr 180 heads
Its not L98 vs 180 AFR. However, it may be an illustrative comparison that might give some insight with the vortec vs AFR Eliminator 195.

Re: afr 180 heads
Goes back together the same way it comes apart......
Just be sure to pay attention to what your removing and where it goes.......
It's always scary @ first, but you'll be walking around like a rooster when it's done.
Maybe this is you're dads' way of sayin he's tired of doin it for ya and giving you a little push to do it for yourself......
Go out and grab yourself a Haynes Manual or the equivalent and learn how to do it..... believe me it's not rocket science......

Re: afr 180 heads
like gta sammy said, it's no biggy, just take your time, my big peice of advice to you, label everything, every wire hose cable rod ect ect ect, also make sure that you get new head bolts(the stockers are probably stretched) also don't forget to drain your coolent before you pull your intake. I would also paint the heads of the intake bolts when the are out, not too much paint though(then a wrench won't fit) but enough to make them look a little nicer. good luck have fun! and remeber digital camaras are your friend!

Re: afr 180 heads
Everyone's scared the first time.....
I've only done 2 rebuilds in my time & I taped and tagged everything....... It's just quicker and easier to put it back together that way.
When I did my AFR head swap this summer I took like 200 pictures..... they come in handy I'll tell ya.
I wished I lived down south where I could be doing a head swap in November / December. My car has been parked in the garage for 6 weeks already.... I guess it keeps the miles off of it

I live in northwest florida and I am glad to say we rarely see snow, I would hate having to put off working on my camaro for several months because of the weather.

one more in the car... RWHP I don't know but she runs so bad I want to get the new 700r4 with the lower first gear so she's more controllable... and add offest trailing arms with 15x10 rims and some good rubber... i was told with the 3.73 rear its like a 4.66 with the low first of the 700r4 and I have a shifter mode that allows me to hold first to whatever alls I can say in a blink I am doing 70+mph...

That is the X-ram setup its a Weiland excelorator intake with a custom made top plate... it works fine. The thing is a real torque monster the way she is setup. Snaps your head back in the seat!

if you are not mech inclined just pay to get it done right the first time. Don't let everyone encourage you into getting over your head.

Re: afr 180 heads
If your dad doesn't want to do it, would he consent to supervise you doing it? The idea is you would do the work while he sat and watched you, but he would be there to catch a mistake if you started to overlook something. here isn't a whole lot to doing heads. The main thing is installing them carefully so that you don't damage the head gaskets when you set them down, (should not be difficult with aluminum heads), putting sealant on the threads of the bolts that go into the water jackets so you don't get water leaks, and torquing the head bolts in the correct sequence and spec. Finally setting the valve lash correctly. The main problem that Isee is that you spent too much time watching your dad work instead of learning to do it yourself.
Another possibility for you is to take an auto shop course at your local community college. The tuition fee will be a lot less expensive than paying a mechanic to do it, and that way you can learn from a pro.

bringing this back from the dead... i will be doin the afr 180 and 1.6 rocker arm swap in feb of 2010.... building an engine from scratch with my dad and with all the deletes we have done to the car, a headswap seems really easy to me now....
