oil pan reseal?

Hey Everyone. I am constantly going back over the mistakes of previous owners with my IROC. It has had a cam swap, which means the timing cover was off, which also means the oil pan was dropped at the front a bit to clear the timing cover. Anyways i have a oil leak that is pretty bad at the front of the pan. The previous owner RTVed the crap out of the front of the pan but it didnt help. Any advice to get rid of the leak? Im thinking i need to pull the pan entirely and reseal it. Is there an easy way that doesnt involve pulling the engine? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Re: oil pan reseal?

My advice would be to just bite the bullet, and drop the pan. The rubber seal was probaly damaged when they did the cam swap and I'm sure you don't want to spend a day trying to fix it only to find out it still leaks. Just my $.02

Re: oil pan reseal?

Motor doesn't need to come out but it REALLY helps to have a hoist to lift it up enough to work the pan in and out.

Re: oil pan reseal?

how would i go about doing it if i dont have a hoist? Is there a procedure for pulling the pan without pulling the motor or lifting it?

Re: oil pan reseal?

At the very least you HAVE to lift the motor at least 3 inches.
After removing the necessary stuff you can jack it up by the pan and place 2x4's in between the motor mounts and motor mount shells. That'll give you enough clearance to pull the pan.

Re: oil pan reseal?

It really isn't that bad.
Just pull your dizzy cap and remove your 2 motor mount through bolts.
Spin your engine over until the timing mark is pointed at 6 o'clock.

Should take no more than 2 hours jack up to jack down.
Good luck.

If you're going to use the pan to jack up the engine......make sure you put a block of wood between the jack and the pan to spread the load. If you don't, you'll dent the pan. Some people jack up the engine using the balancer. Pick your poison. Things can go wrong either way. That's why a hoist is the method of choice.

Re: oil pan reseal?

Only problem with me jacking the motor up 3 inches is that i dont have three inches to work with as far as my exhaust goes (edelbrock headers, flowmaster 3 inch exhaust the whole way back. Im not sure i want to unbolt the exhaust and mess with that since this is the first time in over a year of ownership that i dont have one exhaust leak.

Re: oil pan reseal?

Exhaust is coming out, no way around it. The y-pipe (unless you've got some other funky setup) wraps around the bottom of the pan.
