Car over heating Air Dam question

My 85 IROC while i'm stilling having the idol troubles aside from that will over heat once driven at long distances.

My car is missing the air dam, will that piece of plastic make enough difference to make my car over heat yes or no?

Re: Car over heating Air Dam question

k thank you, i was sure myself that it did make the difference after all the nose cone of the car has no space for the radiator to get enough air to cool the fluids, and for goodness sake the fog lights block 85 percent of the intake, and i was just double checking because someone tried to tell me it didn't matter but i was pretty sure it did. so if you guys are saying it does then i will go get one

oh and fyi this is my first fuel injected car.

Yes, that piece of plastic is very important to the cooling system. My '91 ran about 230-240* on the HWY without it. With it, about 210-225*. I highly recommend getting one.

Re: Car over heating Air Dam question

The Air Dam helps direct some air onto the radiator. It may not be a lot, but that little bit it worth it. Since you have a 305, you have 2 electric fans that cool the radiator as opposed to a belt driven fan on the 350s. Electric fans aren't effective for the 305, and the 305 is known for overheating problems, so you will need all the help you can get.

Also try flushing the radiator out, and getting a "Stant superstat" and fill the system up with the GM Dexcool (Orange) fluid. It really helped out my IROC tremendously, and I can actually rely on the electric fans to keep the engine under 220. Also if you run the A/C, one of the electric fans will run when the A/C is on. The other doesn't "kick on" until the engine temperature reaches 220.

Not all 305s have dual fans. Some have a single fan, and some came with a clutch fan. No 350-equipped thirdgen came with a belt-driven fan, they were all electric.

Electric fans are perfectly effective for a 305, as they are for any other small block.. The 305 isn't any more or less prone to overheating than any other SBC.

Re: Car over heating Air Dam question

well thanks, my electric fan is cool and runs like it could cool a tank motor. but i mean my car really over heats. horribly like when i drive it for too long it will just keep risin. like the radiator isn't cooling the water. i mean it's obvious there is no where for air to hit the radiator cause of the design of the nose cone. so would you be willing to guess that that air dam is my big problem.

Dude, go spend the $ for one. You'll be glad you did. If it wasn't needed, Chevrolet engineers wouldn't have invested the time and $ to design, build, and install it on these cars.

only reason i even repeated myself is because some guy said his ran between 220 and 240 without his but that's damn near operating range and mine just keeps rising. so umm yeah thanks a lot bud. i figured it'd be impossible for that to happend unless he has no bumper so i tryin to more or less figure that out.
