Looking at doing a cam upgrade .....

I've been looking and looking and here's the situation ... (on my 88 IROC 350TPI, mostly stock except for a cat-back and ported intake plenum ...)

I'm looking into a cam that I can use with a stock converter, work with the ECM (reprogram chip, of course) have that stock look but boost my power a bit with those massive 2.77 rear gears

Stock cam is 207/213 duration, .415/.430 lift.

The only I'm looking at is a Crane "CompuCam" roller that's 270/276 duration and .452/.465 lift.

I was told that anything over 270 duration should have a 2500 stall converter. I don't want to go that far. Is the CompuCam a good cam or should I look at others? Any opinions?

I'm maintaining the car as much stock as possible with that little omph (along with my .500 main .296 intermediate boost valves and Corvette servo I ordered )

Thanks, guys, I'm not too knowledgable about them thar cams

And why is it that some advertise .050 duration specs and others not and others don't say ... that's what makes it more difficult!

I'm not real well with cams, but one thing I know for sure is your duration is WAY too high. Try something around the 215-220 range. The TPI units don't do so well with high duration. A cam that you might want to think about is...the Super L-98 Cam by TPIS. I've heard excellent things this cam can do with stock heads and stock intake. Might want to think about it.

215-220 at .050 or advertised?

Stock cam is 207/213 @ .050 whereas the cam I was looking at is 270/276 adv.

I guess it all depends on how they advertise the cam

@ .50

I just checked their site and it seems the Super L98 Cam is not made anymore? Maybe there's more to that...could try calling them.

I could be wrong on this, and if I am, someone will correct me I'm sure.

When running higher duration, you'll make more HP, but it'll be higher in the RPM band. This is bad, because the TPI unit falls short at around 5200. Even with ported base and ported plenum many times you won't see it pulling over 5600.

Comp Cams recommended me a nice cam for the stock engine with some exhaust and air upgrades. 08-501-8 212/218 .488/.495 112LSA
He said it'd give good off idle response and very good midrange torque.

Note: That's @ .050

The Crane cam you have been looking at is the 2032HR. The duration @.050 is 214/220. This cam should be ok but would really like some headers to go with the cat back. Also, a fuel pressure regulator would be nice.
You might want to look at the Accel cam (74216), which is a tad bigger; 216/220 @.050.

I say leave the cam alone...at least until you get a set of headers and some intake mods.

But if you're set..lemmie see if I can narrow it down for ya.

Ignore advertised duration. Just pay attention to the .050 figures, they're much more telling. Ignore lift too, except to be sure that it's not too much to break whatever valvesprings you use. Intake duration should be between 210-218 @ .050, exaust duration should be higher than the intake but is otherwise more flexible. 112LSA is OK..114 is better for your ECM.

Look into the LT4 HOT cam. it's been proven and works very well. Otherwise Comp has an assortment of good Roller profiles available.

Okay, maybe I'll wait a little longer. Here's my ultimate plan on this. Eventually, I'll rebuild it. Mostly stock, bored over 0.030 to 355, port/polish the heads, headers and port the intake man. I still want it to have that "stock" look.

This may happen sooner or later. It doesn't burn a drop of oil, but having 104K miles ... well, "it ain't broke, yet!" ... so a rebuild? Let me get a house first with a garage, then we'll talk.

I was hoping to throw in a cam, gain a few ponies for the time being. Sell it when I'm done or whatever, it doesn't matter. Just want a "stock" engine with a couple of extra ponies. It's a lot of work, but I like to tinker when I have time. hehe ... the wife feels sorry for me when I have to pop the hood on it, I can't get rid of it, she knows better! So we'll see.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I have a better feeling for it now. I know TPI engines are more picky than the traditional, kick-*** carb, but hey ... I work with what I got!

I just wished these damn catalogs would list 050 duration specs ... I had a feeling this adv spec crap would confuse me.

What if I put in those Crane 1.7 rollers? Change the studs, set of push rods and BOOM!

Ditto. Putting a bigger cam on a stock TPI with stock heads will do little for your engine. A bigger cam will tend to shift the power band up the RPM scale. Problem is, the stock TPI and heads won't be able to support it. Thus, all you'll end up doing is killing low-end torque and not be able to take advantage of the higher rpms.

Do as Jester suggests and work on the intake and the exhaust. Then a bigger cam will help. You should also look at the heads too. The TPI really needs all 3 (heads, intake and cam) matched to get the proper results. Lastly, it always better to be slightly conservative on the cam. The number one mistake people usually make is install a camshaft too big for their setup.

Why has no one recommended him the Super Profile L-98 Cam. It is supposed to up the torque of the car (so no worries about losing that) as well as the HP. What is the loss in the cam? The 108 might be a problem but not sure. I don't think a cam is such a bad idea on a stock car, the bad thing is all you have to do to get to the cam. Maybe while intake is off, port it slightly, and get you some headers when you do it all as well. It ought to run pretty good.
