Homemade Octane Booster

This would be really good for the TPI engines with knock sensors.
I found this info today. Wanted to get some opinions. I priced out Toluene here in Canada. $42.10 /5 Imp Gallon. (4.54 liters) I will be experimenting with a few formulas, and post the results. I figured this was the best place for this post, if not then suggest where... I think that there is really something in the info, especially for the super/turbo engines.
First link is the info.

Second is someones analysis, and some experiences.

http://home.kscable.com/ssutton/miat...e/toluene.html

There are lots of links pertaining to this info. Give me some feed back...

Careful ain't the word.
Stuff is a contact poison.
Easy to play with but the penalties are lethal.
For the few degrees extra timing, isn't worth the risks in my book.

One of the main ingredients of gasoline is Toluene. It is also in model glue, paints, cigarettes, nail polish remover, etc. Not something I'd want to drink, but if handled with care, it would be no different than mixing 2 stroke fuel for the outboard or weed-eater. As for the ignition advance, I was thinking of building an engine to use the added 'affortable' octane increase. Besides the fact that without it, you may be losing up to about 6-8 deg of advance at WOT. I have seen how much the ECM retards the timing in real time with a TECK II computer. I just thought that people would be interested.

I have never tried it but on the www.GNTTYPE.org page they have the "recipe" for octane booster using xylene. The guys say they can run more boost with no detonation. Just thought this might help you.

oops. guess i should read all of the replies before i speak. xylene is a tad better for the job though. doing all this with a NA motor isnt going to make gobs of power. the real use to this is with a blown car (ie GN) to prevent detonation at high boost pressures. adding octane booster and advancing timing through the roof will only do so much to a certian limit, but with turning up boost you just get more and more power until you have a fuel delivery problem or until something breaks
