TBI or TPI?
i have a 91RS 305TBI. i plan on dropping in a 350 with Comp Cam and AFR heads. Now i want to be able to run 12's so could i do that with a performance TBI(if so which kinds) and if not what kind of TPI system would meet my requirments(prices would help).

If you live in San Diego you can't have a mini ram, It's not emmisions legal. If you get a Super Ram and AFR's it will be one bad *** car.

If was doing another performance buildup on a TBI f-body (already did one about 8 years ago) I would NOT switch to a TPI -- even though my current ride is TPI equiped.
Having owned both I think the TBI is more flexible once you know what makes them tick.
Good luck to you whatever you choose.

Hello,
The TPI and TBI discussion will go on forever.
TPI is expencive, but I'm happy with the results. I've built a million hot rods with carbs, and they've had mixed results. I've also spent so far, enough on my TPI setup to build two 12 second cars. But thats life.
IMO, TPI is better than TBI in GM's form.
GM TBI utilizes like 38-42 (or so) MM bores.
This is terrible for even a 305, understanding its a "wet" system.
TPI (stock) utilizes 48MM bores, which only air passes through, its a "dry" system.
TPI also uses tuned runners, which achieve
greater torque due to increased air speed entering cylenders, however stock runners after around 4700RPM die because the air cannot counter react off the cylenders.
TBI generally has a greater powerband because
of its lack of plenum and runner, its a direct feed system. But again, its a wet system that IMO is no better than a carb, aside from its obvious electronic functionality.
My truck utilizes a system much like some aftermarket FI setups - a throttle body bolted directly to the baseplate w/out runners, or plenum, and 8 injectors. Its still a dry system, but its not "tuned". It can have some RPM and power benefits available on carbs, and TBI, but also get hte benefit of increased air/fuel of a MPFI
type system.
I'm using SLP runners, ported plenum,
home-made throttle body, airfoil, 22lbs
injectors, adjustable regulator. I was running 13.5 with a stock intake (with
Edelbrock baseplate), so I think with above mentioned items I can get into high 12s, or 12.9 at least. n20 or a blower will futhur
enhance me later.
At the same time, a friend with a similar
motor but with carburation, pulls pretty
consistant low 12s. But his car runs like crap for normal street driving, idles like
a goat, etc.
