ignition box, platinum plugs and exhast question.

I have a 5.0 tpi setup in my formula. ok my mechanic told me if i ran autolite 26ers, my car would be better off than with bosh. So for some reason i asked about platnium plugs. he said dont bother cause my car dosnt run enough voltage or spark or something to the plug to get the platniums hot enough to ware its supposed to be in order for it to work right. so he said if i put an ignition box like msd or mallory on top of all my other ignition upgrades i could run platinum plugs. he also mentioned i would get a little better fuel milage due to a more efficent spark burning all the fuel.

So is all this true? or should i just leave it alone.. i have msd 8.5 wires with a accell ignition coil, cap and rotor.

also i did post on exhust thread but would like your opinion too. they put in reducers on my y pipe to cat and out to the rest of the exhaust. So lets say its a 2.5 y going to a reduced 2.0 pipe to cat out 2.0 to a 2.5 cat back exhaust.. not sure on exact numbers but it is a significantly smaller cat and tubes on it.

What would this do to my car as far as preformance?
Fuel mileage?
and is this one reason my car would feel a little slugish like im towing something?

im keeping the car mostly stock daily driver. so i dont think id put in a cam maybe hooker headers later but for now id just like to stick to those things. thanks in advance...............
