TPI leaking anti-freeze

Hi, I am a new owner of a 1986 T/A. The car did not run when I bought it. It has 135K miles. It runs now but bearley, I ran it for 10 min. and notice the rad fan was not working. Turned it off. notice anti-freeze leaking from the lower drivers side bolt on the T/B. Will the gasket kit from A/Z repair this problem.

Re: TPI leaking anti-freeze

Welcome to TGO.
Is this the gasket kit your talking about?
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP672708/...ductDetail.htm

I would think that it would solve your problem but that is just an assumption and we all know that assumption is the mother of all screw ups.

You could preform the TB bypass that would fix it but not really solve the original problem.

Re: TPI leaking anti-freeze

try tightening the bolts first. if still leaking that gasket kit should fix it. as for your fans not working they dont turn on until about 200* so unless you ran the car long enouogh to achieve this temp thay would not have been on.

Re: TPI leaking anti-freeze

I did tighten the bolts first but still leaked, I am quessing the temp was over 200* because the anti-freeze was boiling into the radiator overflow. I have a new sending unit to be install. Or do you think it could be a bad ECM

Re: TPI leaking anti-freeze

try your fan relay. to jump to conclusions and assume the ECM. ECMs dont generally go bad. go smallest problem to biggest. start w/ fuses and relays. it usually always something simple.

They all boil. The temp switch is set at an incredibly high 243 degrees!

Re: TPI leaking anti-freeze

ok.... are u still having the leaking problem? is it leaking out of your throddle body? if so there is a gasket for the bottom. i have an 86 too, i went to take mine off and actually broke one off, so if i have to replace the gasket i will just have to get a new throddle body, look into the gasket if it is leaking out the bottom

Re: TPI leaking anti-freeze

I bought the gasket kit from A/Z, and took the throttle body off and found that their was a crack across the bottom of the tb. It looks like it had been frozen. I look into the IAC opening and the valve is touching one side of the seat, possible distortion from the crack. I am looking a used TB any help would be greatly appreciated

Good point, but not quite correct.

The fan ON temp for the ECM controlled (first) fan in a two fan system for an LB9 comes on at 226 deg. F.

The second fan is turned ON by a switch that is set for 243 deg F.

On my car (1990 L98):

The primary cooling fan is controlled completely by the ECM and turns on when the A/C head pressure is greater than 233PSI and the vehicle speed is less than 40MPH, or the engine temp is above 222F(106C). When the fan turns on, it will stay on for a minimum of 15 seconds.

The secondary fan is turned on by a temperature switch at 238F(114C). The fan can also be turned on by the A/C head pressure when it exceeds 190PSI, and even by the ECM if it wants. Not sure when the ECM actually commands it on though.
