LT1 intake question

How does an LT1 intake perform on what would normally be an LB9 (305)? The cam in the LB9 is the same as the 350 cam, correct? Anyone know?

A LT1 intake doesn't fit a LB9 or L98 for that matter because the LT1 uses reverse cooling.

The 305 cam is different than the 350 cam..UNLESS the 305 came with a T5..i believe that setup got the L98 cam...don't quote me though...

Thanks Vader for posting the pic, you beat me to it.
I'd say any combo is possible if you think it out all the way through in advance and do lots of research. I did and swapped it in a weekend.
The tech is coming, maybe this week. I've been busy all week.

I wouldnt put an LT1 intake on a 305 engine. It was designed for a 350, and its a pain to do the conversion. Same with the MiniRam and SuperRam. Stick with large tuner or siamesed runners, in my opinion.

The cam difference between a 305 TPI and a 350 TPI is quite a hot debate. Its been accepted that 90-92 TPI all have the good 350 cam. Its also accepted that the 87-89 305 TPI automatics have the peanut cam, while the 305 TPI 5-speeds and 350 automatics have the good cam. But this hasnt been proven for sure, yet.

Thanks everyone, I was just curious as to how it would perform if I were to do like John. I didn't mention it before, but I do have the T-5 tranny, therefore relegating me to the "good" cam. Would the cam theoretically even play a crucial part in that setup (305 LT1 w/"good" cam)?

WE BETTER START A NEW SUBJECT IN THE BOARD CALLED "LT1" and it would be located right under "TPI" so john were there any holes that did not line up with anything but did not matter like the reverse cooling holes etc.

Hoping not to burst your bubble but to make sure you do have the "good" cam, check for RPO G92 to make very sure, that will get it for you. Also swapping an LT1 intake, well that seem like a good idea for a 350, it wouldn't be for a 305 as TPI was developed for a 305 and an after though on the 350. But If you have time, money and an LT1 intake, go for it, would be cool to see the results and how it looks.

Remember I used the LT1 intake not heads. Yes, there were bolt holes that did not line up with anything because the bolt pattern is differant. It does not matter though, I just filled them with epoxy(JB weld) and painted the intake red. Turned out great.

Ha ha, we already knw how it looks, the pic is in this topic. It would be funny if you did it with tall valve covers as the covers would be higher then the intake. I used normal covers and they're the same height as the intake.

He has a 90 IROC with a 5-speed, thats the "good" cam any way you look it, G92 or not. 5-speed TPI cars didnt have peanut cams.

Do you think someone like AFR, who makes both L98 and LT1 style heads, could make a set of heads with the L98 water passages but with the LT1-LT4 style bolt patterns? Maybe they could also tap into the water passages so the the water crossovers could be done externally with hose or tubing. Any thoughts?

LT1-LT4 heads have the same bolt pattern as L98 heads already. There is no difference in the bolt pattern

Wouldn't be cost worthy. Youd have to charge the customer a pretty penny to do this when you could just do an external thermostat like Millican did

I really doubt someone would make a hybrid head when modifying parts works jst as easily.
As to the water passage location, thats an interesting idea. I don't know if the outlets 'have' to come from the front, i know lots of race cars plub coolant lines to the back and even center of the head. Could make for a REALLY trick looking install.

I don't think it would have to be a hybrid head. I suspect that AFR casts the head, then does final machining on a CNC mill. including locating and tapping all of the threaded holes. Since they have already developed the CNC programs to machine virtually identical castings (aren't L98's and LT1's virtually identical in overall dimensions?), wouldn't it simply be a matter of adapting the LT1 program to the L98 head "blank"? Maybe it is just a matter of adding some tapped holes to the heads to facilitate external plumbing. It's just a thought, but I can't see this as being that complicated, maybe AFR could do it as a special order. Brodix (I think) used to offer a reverse flow kit that did something like this. Of course, there are still plenty of other modifications that would be required use the LT1 intake. It's just a thought.

thats why an LT1 is designated as reverse flow.
coolant goes from the heads to the block.
earlier systems flowed from the engine block
to the head and to the radiator. racers tap
the
rear and exteranally balance the flow to cool
the heads off quicker. notice several intake companies
are offering rear coolant passages.
