tpi = pos and cant figure what is worng

I got a 1990 iroc tpi 305 auto tran and what I don’t understand is why it idles so poorly and wile idle the rpms stay at 1000 and dip down every so often and when it shifts while driving from a high rpm to a lower rpm the car starts to putter and kind of shake and putter allmost like it’s going to die and if u tap the gas and bring the rpm back up to about 3000 it stops. idk what to do any more iv hade mechanics look at it all can’t find out what it is and its none of the easy things like plugs cap wires gas presser and other thing that is odd is wile running I unplugged the fuel injectors and it ran normal same with the spark plug wires I un plugged it from the cap once again nothing happens so idk what to do any more im losing faith in my car need help asap =)

hey man... do some diggin with the search function on poor idles... you are not alone. it could be the wires are out of order, the IAC could be messed up, your tps could be out of calibration, etc. though, with your replacement of the cap, rotor and wires i am leaning on having a couple wires swapped. we've all done it before... hell i just did it last week (it was a late night... i was tired). do a wire by wire check, test the tps, and follow the iac instructions in the tech article section.

good luck.. i just discovered that my bad idle issue is one of my POS injectors has decided to stay open... now i gotta find the little bastard

I had a poor idle, and sputter type problem as well. I went through all of the basics (wires plugs etc), even changed the IAC to a brand new one. It ended up being the AFPR (adjustable fuel ressure regulator) had a small hole in the diaphraghm. I replaced it and sure enough it idled smoothly at about 650RPM and no more sputter problem.
Good luck

I agree, doing an erratic idle search is necessary so you can diagnose your car pertaining to your symptoms. If you are lazy from my knowledge and experience of the infamous erratic idle I can tell you that....
My fuel injectors were the cause of my erratic idle. I determined this by OHM'ing out using a multimeter (avg 14.4 OHM) if its below 12OHMs its time to replace.
I had the same problem when my trans shifts gears the car would bog out a bit but a little gas will cure it. This is what I did to fix that.
- Checked for Vacuum leaks and replaced any old hoses that could be a possible culprit.
-Buy MSD ignition components (cap n rotor, coil, wires etc.)
-Replace your spark plugs ( make sure they are properly gapped) make sure your plugs are tight or you will lose compression.
-get some K&N air filters and remove the baffles in your TPI air box! (free HP)
- TPS and IAC may need adjustment and/or replacement
-Oxygen sensor (gets wornout frequently 30$ replacement)
-Transmission oil fluid level and quality( is it black? if so changem!)

if you want to know if you have leaky injectors, here's a quick way to tell (if its a bad leak out).

pull your booster vacuum line off the booster and put it to your ear... have someone turn the car ign to ON.... the fuel pump will pressurize the line, and if you listen you can hear if the injectors are pissing out fuel. my leak was so bad i actually heard the noise with the vacuum line unhooked while sitting in the drivers seat turning the key.

i had the same problem as you about a yr ago . mine were so bad you could hear them hissing if you opened and put your ear next to the throttle body .

there are many other things that can cause these symptoms though , so im not saying you guys should run out and get new injectors .
search this forum , there is years of info on here about this .
1.check your trouble codes .
2.get some carb cleaner or starter fluid and while the engine is cold (carefully so you dont start a fire) spray some on the vacuum lines and around gaskets and listen for a change in idle .
3.get a shop manual and a multimeter and start testing ALL sensor's & injectors (dont just go and buy new stuff for no reason) .
4.check your fuel pressure .

this is just some simple things you can do and you may find your problem , if you dont you still have eliminated alot of common things so you are not wasting your time .
