Mass air inter-changability
I am looking on ebay for a maf. There are a lot of different years listed from 86 to 89, camaro to firebird. Does the year or model car matter just for the MAF? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Medic

Re: Mass air inter-changability
PLEASE forgive me for hijacking this thread, but I have an '85 TPI setup and I'm using MAF P/N 0280213002. I was wondering if I can use another year ('86-'89) MAF on my '85. I don't think that I can because I found out that the '85 is the only year to have a MAFS (P/N 0280215001) module which is used with the above mentioned MAF. If I could use another year's MAF then I can pick one up locally. If not then I need to order one.

Re: Mass air inter-changability
I'm pretty sure that '85 was the first year for TPI. Are you sure it's an '84 MAF?

Re: Mass air inter-changability
It sounds like someone upgraded the '84 carb setup to TPI. Check the part number on your MAF and post it here. Then we can tell the range for what year TPI the setup is from. PRAY that you don't have an '85 TPI setup.....PRAY.

Re: Mass air inter-changability
That's the same part number that I have. I have an '85 TPI setup. The '85s were the first year that TPI was introduced by GM. They use a unique MAF and a MAF control module (called MAFS) which piggybacks the ECM. From what I've read on the internet (someone correct me if I'm wrong) an '85 MAF is not interchangeable with an '86-'89 MAF. This is because the '86-'89 MAF sends a voltage to the ECM while the '85 MAF sends a frequency (?). Also, I've read that the '85 TPI setup is 'unreliable' (not sure why) and not as efficient as the '86-'89 TPI setup. This is understandable as it was the first year for TPI. And as we all know, the first year for anything new normally has its share of bugs.
To confirm that you have an '85 TPI setup, look at your ECM and see if there is a module close to it (P/N 0280215001). If so then you're stuck just like I am...........with GM's very first TPI setup.

Re: Mass air inter-changability
No the whole setup in the car is my 87's original. The only thing i took from the 84 was the intake system. The guy took the motor and trans and we just crushed the car. It was rotted out fully. So your saying that i better take that 85 off and put the bad 87 one on it? Cause you said it isn't interchangeable

Re: Mass air inter-changability
I'm not a TPI guru, so check with some of the 'elders' around here, but I'd say that if you're having a problem then that certainly might be it. The '85 MAF doesn't send the same voltage to the ECM that the '86-'89s do. So if I were you I would disconnect the MAF and see how it runs (your ECM will use pre-programmed voltages). If it runs better than the MAF is your problem. If the problem still persists then your MAF probably isn't the problem.
