was really excited about TPI swap now reconsidering please help

the more and more I have been reading from people the worse it sounds. is it true I have to replace the wiring that goes behind my dash over to the instrumentation? Also does it NEED the charcoal canister? Iw ould like to do without it just for the fact that my engine bay us very clean and I want to keep it that way.

I didn't replace any wiring under the dash, though I did have to fish a few things out to connect my painless wiring harness. Thinks like the ALDL connector, the neutral safety switch, fuel pump relay behind the driver side kick panel and a few other things. The instructions were easy to follow. My 89 RS 305 TBI already had a canister. I bet you could pick a canister up from the junk yard for next to nothing. Not a part in very high demand. If you bought some other parts they would probably throw that stuff in for free. TPI conversion is not easy but I think it is well worth the effort if you are looking for the benefits of fuel injection.

you went the painles wiring way? I have heard that may be better than trying to use the OEM harness. is that true?

Just use a gm harness.
You don't have to run a Cc Canister just because you have TPI.
You might research the varioust years and ecms they used for making an informed decision about what to run ecm wise

Using a Painless wiring harness is only better if one or more of the following are true:

A. Your are an installation shop that finds it cost effective to install a new Painless harness instead of cutting and splicing the old one.
B. You are an electrical novice who is uncomfortable with trying to integrate a FI harness into a car that is not a Camaro or a Corvette.
C. You are an electrical novice who is uncomfortable with trying to repin the harness for a different computer.
D. You are in a hurry to get this done.
E. You are not willing to research what it takes the do the job correctly.

Basicly since you are installing this in your own camaro I think you are fine with the GM harness. The only advantage provided by the Painless harness is step by step directions. To make installation easier you should probably try to find an 86-89 unit. This will allow the fewest changes to the harness. You can integrate your factory VSS into the TPI system. You can also use the factory ALDL and SES light from your 83. If you have a light driver module then you will have to bypass it. With your list of proposed mods you may not want to use a MAF since it could be a restriction. In this case you would need to find a 90-92 harness or repin whichever harness you have. You should also think about what you will do for a chip. There are many on this list who can coach you on burning your own.

I guess what I am trying to say is do all of your research before you commit $$$$$ to this project.

My car was originally CFI. Would this make a difference? I took it out because of the fact that someone before me hacked it to pieces.

I'm doing this swap myself and I found that it was easier to use a stock gm harness. My car is a 89RS that used to have a V6. I swapped in a 350 and bought a engine wiring harness for a 89iroc and it went right into place. plus all the connectors were the right lenth to go exactly where they were supposted to so that made it a little easier to hookup all the sensors and other items.

That is a good point that they will be the exact right length. Well whats the harm in trying right? I just hope everything finds a place.

I didn't like using the Painless harness, and If I had to go back and do it again, I'd use a GM harness out of a wrecked car or something.

I didn't use the Charcoal canister either.

Why do you want to convert to TPI? Don't you like top-end power?

I want drivability and MPG's. Also I want more low end power. Plus if I ever get the craving for more top-end then I will just get a superram
