85 ECM works with older maf?

Ok so I purchased a MAF sensor a while back at a swap meet it was a Bosch part number 0280213002. I had posted up a while back that a friend of mine needed a MAF sensor so tonight on a whim we tried this one and it works! This is the part number for the newer cars as far as I can tell so what gives with this? Will the 85 ecm's function with the analog style maf or has his setup been converted possibly? I've seen a few people say they tried swapping in a newer style maf and it worked so I'm confused now. Also does anyone have an answer for why the "analog maf meter in use" switch is turned off in the newer .bin files if you do in fact have an analog maf? I've searched for this and it's confusing I can't seem to get a solid answer.

Re: 85 ECM works with older maf?

What was the part number of the one (OEM?) that was replaced?

Seems like everything was already set Digital. 86 to 89 was the same, but 3-4 differant part numbers.

Re: 85 ECM works with older maf?

I think part number 0280213002 is a Bosch MAF for 1985 cars. So to me it makes sense that it works with his 1985 ECM. I have an '85 TPI and this is the sensor that I use. From what I've gathered by searching on the web for this part, it will only work in an '85 because the '85 is the only one to have both a MAF and a MAFS module (and they work together). I may be VERY wrong on this because I'm a newbie here. Anyone know about this?

Re: 85 ECM works with older maf?

Upon inspection this guy sure does look like an 85 maf! It's totally different than my 87 MAF and looks just like the 85 maf we pulled. The parts stores have no freaking clue what's up, only Auto Zone actually acknowledges that there's a difference in the 85 mAF with a different part number. To top it off the microtech maf I bought is supposedly universal, but it needs to be tuned to work on my setup (suck) and I'm not sure if that's because it's output is the older analog style so it will be universal or if it's just a different to cause everyone headaches. I seriously think it would be easier just to convert ALL OF THESE CARS over to MAP at this point.

Re: 85 ECM works with older maf?

I've found one on SIA Electronics for $100. There's a $32 core charge. I guess I'll be picking one up soon as I've broken two 'prongs' (??) off my MAF.

1991CamaroRSlow, I'm running into the same thing as you are. Most auto part stores are uncertain about the '85 TPI setup with regards to the MAF and MAF module (MAFS). I'm hearing two different things from Napa and Autozone. Oh well, good thing there are websites like this one to find information on.

Re: 85 ECM works with older maf?

Out of curiosity I installed my 87 MAF on a 1985 Corvette the other day, it will absolutly NOT WORK. The car fumbles and runs like total crap. It will run but it runs like poo. So I know this doesn't work in every case. Point being if you have an 85 car get an 85 maf.

Re: 85 ECM works with older maf?

Exactly. The only thing that will work with an '85 is an '85 MAF.

I just put a MAF from a 1986, PN# ending in 009 on a 1985 TPI replacing a bad MAF PN# ending in 002 and it runs great !
