Can You Get make a TPI for a none TPI 350? Please Read
I have done some research but can someone layout for me just strait out why TPI is so much better than the basic 305 or 350 layout? Why might someone want it? And can you do as much with a stock 350 none TPI to a 350 with TPI?
I do not know much about TPI hell cars in general but I love them. I got a 87 I-roc Z and I have the org. 305 which is not TPI. If I dropped a 350 in there that also was not a stock 350TPI can some how you make a none 350, a TPI? With a little moding?
Sorry if it might be a dumb question. Thanks so so much. Tyler

Sure; of course you could.
You'd need an in-tank or other high-pressure fuel pump, the appropriate fuel lines, a suitable ECM, and wiring. Maybe a few incidental things that alot of the other (non-TPI) cars had, that are partly responsible for their generally lower performance; like, get rid of the crappy LG4 or L03 exhaust and put the larger system that came with TPI motors in there, or replace it with headers, maybe a few other things.
One way to do that would be to get a TPI car, and strip all that, and move it over.
On the other hand, why go to all that trouble?
The quickest, easiest, 2-step method to converting a carbed or TBI car to TPI:
Step 1 - Sell other car
Step 2 - Buy TPI car
Pretty easy, really.

Well, I might be mistaken here, but it seems to me you dont really know exactly what the TPI is.
It's the fuel injection system, "Tuned Port Injection", and as engines go, a fuel injected car versus a carbed one, is easier to start, gets better milage, and just works better when cold. That in addition to the fact that the 350 L98 TPI engine were the top performer in these cars, make them desirable.
THe carbed and TBI(throttle Body Injection) engines, were generally lower performing engines, but any of these 3 technologies can supply alot of power.
The by far easiest route is to go carb. There's not alot that can go wrong when building a carbed engine, since the carb itself do all the tuning by design. While TPI cars need to get special chips made, often many before things start getting right. However, when you first get it right, a fuel injected engine is always alot more drivable, than the same powelevel with a carb, especially when your going with alot of power.
It's basically old school versus new school, these cars had both in stock form, and some like the easyness of the carbs, some like the good driving experience of injection.
TPI do present a bottleneck at the higher HP levels though, but then again, who drives a 500hp car daily anyway.

more for the descriptions of what the available systems are, and their differences..
in the end i think we all agree
yes it would work
its more realistic to find a true TPI motor/wiring harness/ecm : )

my opinion on tpi and throttle body verses carborator is that the carborator is the cheapeast route to go. TPI is expensive but not eveyone can say that my car is Tuned Port Injection and if you have a IROC or FORMULA and if you convert to a carborator you dont have a real IROC or FORMULA. And for all you people who say other wise you can kiss where the sun dont shine. I love old cars but you should keep em as original as they come if you have a Nova keep it carborated and so forth.
