dissapointment sets in
wow... what a bummer...just fished pulling the motor out of my ride and the first thing i saw at the tranny was " GM 5.0 LG" that sucks... then i found the rest of the casting numbers and found out that it is a camaro motor out of an 86 either iroc or z-28...(mortec) its a two bolt main with 1 piece rear seal... and i pulled the comp. out and in yellow paint marker it says '86 camaro tpi... so instead of the L98 i thought i had its a LB9... i cannot just look at a motor and tell whether it is a 305 or 350 so this was a complete shocker... so now plans are out the window for this motor build and am looking for a 350 block.... still gonna build a 383 but the plans are for carb for sure now..... about how much should i ask for a running 305 tpi with computer? im sure i can find someont local to buy, maybe trade a bare 350 block or something but need to know about how much the motor is worth...thanks

An 86 L98 would have been a very rare engine to find in anything- even an orginal 86 Camaro! I think the build numbers on 86 350 TPI f-body engines numbered only a few hundred. They're almost mythical- like unicorns. 87 was the first year you could find 350 TPI engines in f-bodies in any serious numbers. You can look elsewhere on this board for year-by-year specs on what engines were available and how many were known to have been built.
Sell the TPI system by itself. Throw the 305 in the dumpster after stripping it of any usable parts (oil pan, valve covers, etc.) or give it to a friend who needs "anything" to get his car running again.

Umm , the maf tpi stuff may be worth $100-$200.......... The 305, well, most people would probably charge you to take it off your hands.

is that price including the computer? the wiring harness is trash, but you can pick one up from painless... i figured the computer alone would be worth about 150 and the tpi components about 200... the the combo together including the block... about 450? the motor worked fine before i pulled it out...

Re: dissapointment sets in
i have my mind made up on 383 build... when i origonally bought the car when i was 15, the guy that sold me the car told me he had put in a L88 from a corvette. well, time went by and i was heading off the college, so a friend of the family sold me an explorer and used the camaro as a down payment because the camaro wasnt very reliable. i had already replaced the trans and gas didnt last long in it, plus the gas gauge didnt work... so i took the explorer. i am out of school now and am working in a steel mill, sold the explorer and bought an 06 f-150, since i have a reliable everyday driver i thought it would be a great project car to buy the camaro back. so i did and started doing some research, found out that the L88 was a 427 bb... i knew i didnt have that so i figured he ment to say L98 from a corvette. the heads have peremeter bolts so its from '86 or earlier. well, when i oulled the motor out saturday, i was dissapointed... i dont want to build a 305... i want to start with a 350 bare block and stroke it to 383, .030 overbore.

Re: dissapointment sets in
You have a good platform to do that on. Just find a good 350 to build up and throw the TPI on top of it.

Agreed, just go get a good harness (not a painless) at the junkyard and put the HSR on top. It'll be cheaper than buying a new carb, intake and distributor anyway.

Re: dissapointment sets in
That is about the worse carb you could choose. The 600 cfms run good on stockish engines for daily driving, but its about the last carb that I would choose for performance.
