Running hot...HELP!
Ok...I just moved to Georgia.. Augusta to be specific...
At any rate...I dont know if its the humidity, the new K&N filter, or thermostat, or whatever, but the cars temp gauge is climbing right up to 220 and beyond.
For some reason, since the K&N went in, shes been running hotter...should i switch back to paper or something?
160/170 thermostat?
Advice is a good thing here...I cant afford to have the T/A croak.

an air filter generally wouldn't cause that to happen what are the symptoms are you overheating in traffic or on the highway?if it's on the highway check your air dam on t/a's they are crap i put on an iroc air dam makes a world of difference if not check to make sure the fans are coming on at 217 degrees and a last resort make sure the waterpump is operational.i'm assuming you have coolant in the radiator!!!!!!

Shes running hot just about everywhere...highway, traffic, stopped, etc.
Quite simply, since the K&N was put in, its running hotter.
Water pump works fine.
Air damn is still ok for the most part....
The fans dont come on automatically...I had to wire a manual on/off switch into it til i can find whatever is broken thats supposed to turn em on.
KEep the ideas coming though, eh?
Thanks

How old is your radiator?
My IROC ran warm since I bought it last year.
The fan ( aftermarket ) was wired to run all the time. The lower air dam is there and working. I swapped in a new water pump, but it still ran warm. It was also pinging quite a bit. around 200* according to the gauge. last week the car started to show signs of over heating.. I swapped in a new radiator, and a 160* stat. The car runs MUCH cooler now. Just barely cracks 120*. I am going to switch to a 180* stat and see how it runs.
The plenum used to get too hot to even touch on just a short 5 mile trip.... now even after an hour of driving it only gets warm. Also the pinging problem is gone

You'll make it into closed loop at about 105, but there maybe other sensors affected by only a 120.

The coolng fan problem...the relays right above the battery, they go bad all the time.
Also, remove the radiator and check to see if theres a buildup of crap between the rad and the A/C condenser. That is also a common problem that is often overlooked.
Another thing you may want to do is gound out the wire going to the sensor on the pass. side cylinder head. It controls the fans. Thats where you may want to hook up a switch. One side to the wire, the other side to ground. The fans will then have full manual control while still having adequate power supply at all times.
Also change the thermo to a 160 or 180*....
Should solve all your problems....

When I went to a 160° stat, my temp was right between the 100° & 220° mark, When I went to TPI, I kept the stock 190° stat without changing a thing to the gauge, and it READS 220°, but I know it is only at 190°, because my scan tool tells me so, and 1 fan should kick in at 222° with an 86-88 stock chip.

Stock fan turn on temp on an 86 is 234°.

Also be aware that the 86 most likely has a bugged stock PROM. Updated to the new PROM will solve many potential problems as well as lower your fan turn on temp. You will find the TSB about this in the tips section as well.

Torchta, welcome to the Hot 'Lanta. You now know why it has earned it's name. My car runs about the same but for a couple different reasons. I would suggest you flush the system and run some water wetter with a little less anti freeze. If you have problems doing this there are a bunch of Camaro guys here who will give you a hand. Check out my site....
