Cleaning TPI

Hey guys, i took a flashlight and looked inside the intake plenum and saw it was covered with like 1\8 inch of carbon and crap, maybe thicker in some places, anyways i know it wont effect it too much there, but im affraid of the restricted airflow in the intake runners, anyways my question is, can i take them intake plenum OFF and like high pressure wash it? would it rust or corrode? or is it the same coating as the outside? im gonna take the throttle plate thing off the front, and clean that with the right stuff.

Clean all that crap off... as much as you can and as best as you can... Then say 'hello' to throttle response.

I'm thinking you would be hard pressed to have MORE than 1/8" carbon buildup inside your plenum or runners. What you may be seeing is the various contours of inside the plenum.

Carbon is a natural process inside the plenum and removing it will make you feel better but won't improve your performance that much.

What will be more effective is to clean the IAC in the Throttle Body and the EGR passages in the plenum.

I used some carb cleaner over a oil change pan. This collected the carb cleaner I sprayed and I used a brush to keep brushing inside the runners and plenum until the carbon was broken loose.

What would be the most effective if you are going to remove your plenum, throttle body, and runners would be to port the plenum. If you are going to dissasemble these parts round up the following gasket sets:

17113115 Gasket Kit - Includes the IAC Gasket, the Lower Cavity and TPI Plate gaskets. $ 18.21

14084350 Gasket - Throttle Body to Plenum.
$ 2.20

MS 93160 FELPRO Upper Intake Gasket Set
$12.75

Keeping in mind that these are the numbers for my 86 5.0 TPI and that your particular numbers may be different.

You will not see a throttle response difference except (as MIKEINAZ points out) in cleaning up the throttle body and the IAC circuit. That is the only place that the cleanup will improve throttle response.

The plenum doesnt have 1/8" of carbon in there. I've cleaned at least a dozen plenums, and have to do it as part of my porting and powdercoating process. However, I do not think it takes up a significant amount of plenum volume, and think it reduces the port cross-sectional area by a negligble amount. We are talking a .010 thick layer at most.

I'm pretty sure you could just throw the plenum in your dishwasher, that should get it good enough.
