What cam for my setup?

What cam would I choose to maximize my setup. Heres what I got.

1. TPIS Runners
2. SDPC Vortec intake for TPI
3. Vortec Heads
4. Ported the $hit out of the plenum
5. 42mm TB
6. MSD
7. T-5
8. Posi with 3.23's
9. 22lbs injectors

I was looking at getting the LT4 hot cam but would the setup work? What else do you guys recommend and provide any links or hp #'s please?

Re: What cam for my setup?

Well, You have Vortec heads. That's great! But are they the off the shelf Vortec's or do they have the upgraded springs? The regular Vortec's have smaller .480 lift capable springs on them. We need more info...

Let's just say the heads were fixed to whatever cam I would get. They are ready to bolt on but they will get machined for the right clearance and they will also have the right springs. So what you all got for me.....

Re: What cam for my setup?

zz4 cam or LT4 hotcam works but i think itll work better on 1.6 rockers which i believe the .525 lift is rated at on that cam.

Re: What cam for my setup?

heres a better question or questions for you to consider

what is the goal of this combination? Is it a daily driver that needs to retain best possible street manors or can it get away with alittle street strip action? how much power you hoping to achieve or what ET's you plan on running?

this is all very important to know when selecting a cam

First of all thanks for responding. Now it is a daily driver but it can get away with a little strip action. I've heard that with the vortecs you can acheive close to 400HP with the right combination so I'm hoping for something close to that or more. I'm thinking of gettng the car to run at least real low 13's or high 12's. I did consider the LT4 cam because I do have aluminum 1.6 RR.

Re: What cam for my setup?

I would go with CC304.

210/220@.050
.500/.510 with 1.5s .533/.544 with 1.6s
114LSA <-------- VERY GOOD FOR STREETABILITY

This should make close to 400hp with the parts you have. Mid 12s car that idles like a stocker.

Re: What cam for my setup?

42mm TB or a 48mm? never heard of a 42mm.
Going to need a adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
If your going to do all that.....id jump up to 24lb injectors.
22 were stock for a 350.

Yes I meant 48MM... Now does anyone have any opinions on the TPIS cams?

Re: What cam for my setup?

cc304 aint bad at all, that will get you low 13's high 12's depending onthe rest of the car

another i like is the cc502, 218/224. alittle more cam but still workable.

TPIS ZZ9 cam is one of the better proven cams for TPI cars. Works decent with other intakes too, but a solid choice for TPI

If you get a high stall converter, proper gears, sticky tires you can get low 13's with a BOlt on L98. Mine has hit 12.90's with HSR intake ontop of the stock L98 longblock. About 320ish crank hp.

LT4 hotcam would not be a bad choice for that motor setup. It will be near 300whp or so. plus you can get those cams used for cheap.

Either of these cams tho will need a chip programmed for it. Fuel pressure regulator may handle the smaller cams, but to get BEST performance and driveablity, get a tune.

OH and whatever cam you decide to get, make sure your heads can handle it. as cast vortecs are only good to .480 lift. you will need to shim up the springs and run offset locks to get .530 lift, or else run expensive but worth it beehive springs/retainers which will give you near .550" lift i hear

Re: What cam for my setup?

lol crane is fine too. they all make good off the shelf grinds

basically anything in the 210-220 intake duration and 214-224 exhaust duration is fine for a TPI car for his goals in mind

Re: What cam for my setup?

Good cam suggestions above, except for the CC304. That's at best a mediocre performer in a NA setup due to the lazy old-style ramps and too-wide LSA. It only makes sense for a very mild SC setup.
The CC502 is the best choice IMO.
The CC501 is also a good one for what you're doing.
ZZ4 can be had for cheap and would perform equivalent to the CC501, just under the 501 in the midrange, and just over up top.
