car tries to die when i give touch the throttle...

my car is a 89 L98 and while driving today i had been on the highway for about an hour and then got off and stopped at a redlight. then when the light turned green and i hit the gas and it would do nothing but bog and kinda lightly backfire. it idled just fine though. so i stopped in a parking lot, and tried to rev it and it wouldnt do anything but bog and lightlty backfire again. so i left it for an hour or two and came back and it started right up and worked just fine all the way home. does anyone know what this could have been? the fuel filter was just changed in september. its a 89 L98 with aluminum corvette L98 heads and TPI. please help!

Not sure..

could it be a sticking valve?
or maybe a flakey TPS?
have you checked your fuel pressure while driving?
anybody else have ideas?

For what it's worth I had an ignition module go bad which started out with the same symptoms. At first it would only act up when I drove the car for long (over 30-45 min.) periods of time. Eventually it got worse and did it all the time, which made it a heck of a lot easier to diagnose. Not sure if it's your problem...but a possibility.

i shouldve mentioned that the ignition module is new. this was so odd because it ran absolutly perfect on the highway and just all of the sudden it didnt want to go anywhere when i gave it gas but it WOULD idle at a constant speed. and whats worse, it didnt give me a single code. damn cars! does anyone think this might be a coil started giving chitty output after it got hot? the temperature was around 65-70 here yesterday when this all took place.

Car: 1991 Formula Firehawk (Clone)
Engine: 350 with Firehawk Package
Transmission: 700R4
...I had an EGR valve and an O2 sensor go bad and it gave me the exact same symptoms. It didn't throw a code that day, but when I started it up the next morning the SES light was on and it had thrown a hard code.

Do you have an air filter in there. If not, check and see if you have a piece of trash sucked up against the Mass Air Screens

I know this is a old thread but I was doing a search and whiterocz described exactly what has happened to me on a few occasions and I don't know what causes it. I noticed it only happens when car is running hot (220*), fuel pump makes a lot of noise, very strong gas odor, and fuel pressure drops to around 20psi, needle flucuating at least 10psi. Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Ken

it turned out that my old problem was the fuel pump. it gave out once it got hot. it would run perfect when cold, but after a few hours of driving, it would just sometimes sputter violently then die. it only did it at random too. i changed the fuel filter, coil, cap, rotor, wires, and the whole nine yards, then i took it on a 6 hour trip and it ran perfect the whole time. then the next day it started showing the same symptoms so i was out of ideas so i just got a fuel pump, replaced it and it has ran flawless for 3 months.

...and I thought I had problems.

Bad ECM? You might try to borrow a friends ECM (for trouble shooting)and see if it makes any difference. Just a thought.

I think Jimbos idea is worth looking into. I have heard the same from others in the past.

Thanks for the help on my car. I haven't figured it out yet.

Sorry whiteroc!

Didn't mean to mess with you! It's just that whiterocz (are you guys related? j/k) described an occasional problem I'm having to a T.

I've been thinking it was the fuel pump, but didn't want to deal with that PITA! Oh well.
If everything was easy there would be no sport in it, right?

Thank for the responses!

Ken
