head cam choice

hey guys simple question.

i got a 92 trans am l98

i have my stock heads out to be ported and polished as well as 1.6 roller rockers. i have the holly tpi stelthram setup sitting here ready to be installed as well. im not going to crazy with my setup only cause im a student and i have no money. what would you guys sugest to go with this setup for a cam. i want something will make the most power for my setup. i dont mind having a chip installed so i would love you guys to go crazy with your suggestions.

what is the max lift a stock l98 head can take?
i was thinking to go with a 1.5 rocker instead of the 1.6 to get a longer duration?

is this true below?
factory hydraulic roller for 87-89 corvette and F-body w/350tpi
270-104224 270/276 duration .452/.465" lift RPM 1600-5400

Re: head cam choice

well it depends on the work done to the stock heads. if they have the guides cut down and clearanced for bigger springs, you can go fairly wild with the cam

stock heads only accept 1.25inch wide springs *i think 1.29 beehives will fit tho not sure* and only handle .470-.480 lift before stock retainer hits the guide boss. you can get those machined down to have more clearance and/or shim the springs up and use offset locks to raise overall spring height above guide boss.

If any of that is done,

i'd suggest something like the CC503 cam with stock ported heads. its a 224/230 cam with .503/.510 lift with 1.5 rockers. Revs to 5800rpms. Good match with the stealth ram.
originally gonna be my choice but i decided to stepup larger since i got better heads than i thought i'd be using

Another good cam would be anything in the 218-226 intake duration and similar exhaust duration. anything near .500 lift. Comps 502 grind is step down from above, its a 218/224, also a nice powerfull cam. Cranes 227 grind is nice too (forget the specs off hand), step up from stock but still gets power to the tires.

any cam with ported heads/hsr will need a tune tho

That's a Crane cam you posted. It's a considerable improvement over the factory cam, but still mild enough to work with the factory chip. It's a very commonly used cam with tpi motors. If you're looking for a large gain over stock though, you'd be better off using the 502 or 503 Comp cams that Orr suggested. Those will require prom tuning to be optimal though, not to mention an aftermarket base and better flowing runners. 24# injectors would also help, which also require a prom adjustment. If you're sticking with a modified tpi setup, go with the 502, if going with a stealth ram, mini ram, super ram, etc., the 503 would be a good choice.

Re: head cam choice

honestly, for what you are spending on portwork to a NON-performance head you could have bought a stock set of L98 vette heads and been ahead of the game!
Vette heads 2.00 1.56 valves,987 comp spring,7/16 1.6 rockers and studs
LPE 219/219 560 112 cam,CC503,crane 227 or tpis ZZ9
2600-3000 stall
will be your best bet!A real chip will be needed!
