Another running rich post

I have done two days of searching. And tried the stuff I found.
I have an 88 350 TPI auto 2.77 car. And it is running very rich.
When I hit the gas just partial throttle it hesitates and then revs but not as fast as I would expect. If I floor it, it will pause for a second then rev slow.

I have got it to run right for a second if I let it get warm. Turn it off. Then turn it back on it will rev normal for about 3-5 seconds after it starts and goes back to stumbling and being stupid.

I got the car a month ago and it barely ranso here is everything I have done and know about the car over the past month.

- Reman Mass, Cardone (remanned from the Bosch unit) fixed my only SES code
- New fuel pump 45 PSI
- New MSD cap and rotor
- New Summit Coil
- Reman dizzy Cardone w/ new module (this fixed my dying problem as the shaft had slop in it and was getting into the reluctor)
- New plug wires
- TPS checked and adkusted to .54, sweeps steady to 4.00
- New Fuel filter
- New CTS
- K&N's
- New NTK O2 sensor
- Airfoil
- New Harmonic balancer, nodular iron, timing checked and rechecked several times at 6*
- The plugs in the car were new. I only pulled the number one plug and it was dry and black
- Checked the ECM and it still has the stock PROM
- AIR system is gone
- EGR was not hooked up, I got solenoid and hoses and hooked it up, it is not bolted down (does that matter?) Either way it made no difference
- Idles in park at 900, drive around 500
- new 195 stant superstat
- all injectors are ticking
- checked all the plug wires to make sure they are getting spark with my inductive timing light
- My right fan comes on with the ignition, the other one comes on if the car gets too hot
- Remanned Silver Dart transmission, shifts good but my speedo is not correct and bounces all over, so I am sure the VSS isn't letting the trans know the correct info
- Still has original cat, has new cat back system
- some exhaust leaks somewhere
- All the vacuum lines have been checked and rechecked too many times to count.

The EVAP is not hooked to the engine in anyway, it is all rerouted to the vent line for the tank

I drove the car 20 miles the other night, horrible gas mileage, seemed to run flat and have about 2/3 the power it should.

Somebody please help me. I am out of money and way behind getting this car running to pass emissions and have a daily driver. Sorry this is long.

Re: Another running rich post

One other thing, I had the car running and pulled the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and there was no fuel coming out of it. But it didn't change anything on how the car was running. Is that normal?

Re: Another running rich post

When you pull the vaccum line from the Fuel Pressure Regulator, all it does is simulate WOT. There should not be any fuel coming from it. I had the same thing happening to my car, and I put a laser on the headers and found the tube coming from the #3 cylinder was not hot. I pulled the plug and it was only gapped at like 3 degrees. Apparently I dropped it when I was installing it and I learned that if you ever drop a plug ALWAYS regap it. It sounds to me like you're running on 7 cylinders, because that is exactly what my car was doing. Don't just throw parts at it.

Re: Another running rich post

Thanks for the repsonse.
Well, the only part I have thrown at it is the CTS thus far, it needed everything else. I will put new plugs in it and see if that changes anything. It has new Bosch +2's in it, they were in it when I got it.

I have a set of Champion Copper Cores and a set of AC's. Anyone like the Chapions?

I will also ohm the injectors to see what they are doing.

I am pulling 16 on the vacuum guage.

Anyone else?

update

I pulled all the plugs and they were all tan at the ground strap; black around the outer edge. They were Bosch 2 + 2's. I put in Champion and there is no change.

I ohmed all the injectors and they all came in 16.7 - 17.1.

I unplugged the cold start injector and it made no difference.

I unplugged the new MAF and it ran worse.

I ran it in field service mode.
- Open loop first = constant flash
- Closed loop did the one flash a second for 6 flashes and then went to the constant flash, which I guess means the computer recognizes it is running rich. At least we agree.

I also did a vacuum leak test with carb cleaner and nothing different.

Can not having the evap connected to anything other than the vent line cause this rich and stumbling condition?

Anything else I can try? I do not have the equipment or money for data logging unfortunatley. BUt it is on the list....

Re: update

What's your fuel pressure?
Do you have stock injectors?
Is your firing order 1000% correct?
Bad cat's won't cause you to run rich but running rich will cause a bad cat.

Re: Another running rich post

I had a problem similar to this during the summer, i would step on the gas and nothing. my headers were glowing red and everything. what ended up being the cure for my was a new ECM. it was causing my car to stay constantly in a lean condition and yea just no power. second i changed it, she was shredding tires again

Re: Another running rich post

Fuel pressure is 45 psi
Stock injectors
firing order has been triple checked

What if one of the injector plugs was swapped? How do you know which connector goes to which injector?

Re: Another running rich post

the connectors will really only go to one injector unless you really try to mess it up

Batch fire. All the injectors on one side fire at the same time.

Re: Another running rich post

Batch huh? Didn't know that one. I have got another post going on the issue under general tech as there is another problem. Looks like everyone feels a leaky injector is the issue. I will report my findings when I get a chance to get back at it. Stupid car has actually made me sick, literally.

Re: Another running rich post

If you test your FP and it holds, then you have no leaky injector. Minor leakdown is normal.

Re: Another running rich post

Tried testing the fuel pressure. Oddly enough my test guages fitting is too large for the schrader valve. I have usually been able to get it on TPI's with a little headache including this car, but not anymore....
Oh well, I guess I will get a new one.

Oddly enough I started the car yesterday and it ran fine. Drove it and it had power. Hesitation was gone, stumbling was gone.

Tried it two to three hours later and it was still ok. Very slight hesitation, no stumbling. And when I put the car in field service mode it no longer registered as being rich. Very odd.
