Scott 88 GTA and people w/ LT4 hotcam...(Q's on the swap)
how are the idle characteristics w/ the stock PROM? I have the 85 MAF and am concerned w/ the initial running quality of the engine. If I can install the Hotcam and not have a huge headache for a week or two fixing the ills associated w/ the cam after the engine transplant, I'd consider it to be a great option, especially for the price.
I want to then switch to the 86-89 ECM and ARAP bin, but I want to be able to do it at my liesure.
I think Kevin91Z ran a modified L98 w/ a stock 305 TPI ECM. I believe he now has SD and the hotcam and can give me good advice as well. Kevin where a good local place to get the 165 ECM? Those are usually plucked before the cars are put in the salvage yards.
Should I add the hotcam to my list?

Hey James... how's that combo working out for you ? I have pretty much the same combo except different cam and no runners.

I have everything (except the cam)...and they are still in the boxes. I have to wait until this semester is over to install. But it gives me time to port match everything.

James, the initial idle quality with my stock 88 PROM was ok at best. When the engine was cold it was very hard to start. It'd just start and die if you didn't give it gas. However once it warmed up into closed loop it did alright.
Since the initial swap I have switched over to the ARAP bin and am currently still running it. This PROM provides acceptable idle qualities with the HOT cam. It's not near as smooth as stock, but it has never stalled on me. In fact, the only bug I really have with it is I'm having trouble with it switching back to open loop if I idle at a stoplight too long. I think this may be because I don't have a heated O2 sensor.
Personally I would reccomend upgrading to the ARAP bin at the same time, you'll be much happier. And if you're going to upgrade, you really might as well just convert to SD. The more I start learning about how the computers work, the more I start to like the flexibility of the SD setup.
BTW, Kevin's car has always been SD.

I used ZZ4 heads and cam and it idled fine. But when I put in the LT4 HOT cam, it idled like crap, the idle hunted up and down, it ran so rich it burned my eyes, and other such problems. Once I reset the IAC and TPS, set the timing to 6º initial, and adjusted the fuel pressure to 48 PSI, it idled a lot better but still wasnt right. I got into PROM burning at the same time and have been tweaking the chip to make it idle better and run its best at part-throttle and wide-open throttle.
TPI parts are very difficult to find in regular junkyards, you have to get lucky. If you have an 85 setup now, I highly recommend switching to speed density, if you're going to swap. At the very least, ditch the 85 stuff and switch to 89.

I picked up a 730 ECM yesterday. But I think I still want to switch to the 165 and the ARAP bin first. After I get comfortable and then confident then maybe I'll consider the SD switch.
