Would putting an open cone filter on be better than gutting the air box?

I gutted my air box, two square holes to try and get more air in. I was wondering what ya'll thought about the open k&n cone filter being put on instead. Would that work better? Would it just allow more hot air in? I feel my gutted air box does just that...lets more hot air in. Is that better than less air that is somewhat cooler?

I have taken the screens out, TPIS air foil in, K&N filter, gutted box. I feel the filter helped initially. Then doing the others did not seem to help at all.

I didn't really want to start cutting holes in my car to get a cool ram air effect. Nor did I want some racer boy, my car is modded, look at my funnel for air sticking out under my car type of look...

What else can be done?

Hey guys I removed all my crappy airbox and stuff and made a Ram Air for my car. I bought the K&N filter from Fordsource.com for $38.00 it's 9"long and has a 3"inlet. 3" PVC pipe from Lowes and Paint from Walmart. It all cost me about $50.00. Now when I'm in my car with the hood closed and windows up I can still hear it sucking! Hope this helps Here's some pics before and after.

I did the same thing as Jobryan, replacing a cut air-box. I relocated the MAT at the same time. It made a big difference in how the car ran - I could really feel it, although I don't have any timeslips to quantify the improvement. Better than spending $200 on the SLP induction, and just as effective.

Hey Jo, us po' *** Ky boys know how to save a buck to blow later on other stuff, huh?

It's a Pontiac, his battery is on the other side. BTW nice job on that, doesn't look like a homemade intake.

jobryan26, could you please put up a clearer picture of the intake, it's kinda fuzzy. I really like it. It looks great.

Thanks,
Jesse

On my '89 Formula 350, I bought a small cone K&N (I don't have the part #), removed the cannister and stuck the cone on the end of the bellows. It fits perfectly with no hood interference.

I can measure the filter if any wants the specs.

Thanks for the Compliments. I couldn't see paying $200.00 for an intake so that's when I decided to try it. And I did notice a nicer throttle response. Definitly a thumbs up. I also sanded it all down and primed and painted all to make it match. This pic was before I polished the inatake, runners, and anything else I could fine.

That is a really nice lookin intake setup jobryan26. I have to compliment ya on that work. I have one suggestion; take that charcoal canister out of there and install it into the trash can. The natural shaping of the ponitac fender and the air dam channel the air into the area where you have your filter creating a "ram air" effect at speed but that canister is right in the way. The SLP kit has a box that bolts right up to the fender where the canister usually mounts and it relocates the canister to the other side by the battery. The SLP system seals to the fender to only allow fresh cold air into the engine but your system will also pick up that air if you get that canister out of the way. You could even extend that intake tubing to put the filter right in the hole of the fender to get the most fresh air possible. I have an 87 GTA and I got the entire air intake setup off of an 88 GTA from the bone yard for cheap and bought a used 3" cone filter that was on a mustang and added a small piece of PVC tubing to get the filter right into that opening of the inner fender. I also grabbed the rubber little shield piece that keeps the hot engine temp air away from the filter off of that 88 GTA at the bone yard. It looks like a mud flap thing that extends from the core support back to the coolant reservior. My system cost me about $50 and I got a lot better throttle response and a little more power out of it. Hope that helps...Laterzzzzzz..........

Also....I trashed my canister but took the purge solenoid off of the top of it and hid it in the core support just incase the ECM is looking for the canister it will still think it is there. (This only works because the OBDI ECM is stupid and does not actually look for flow when it requests a purge of the charcoal canister.)

Hey Matt,
Thanks and I was wondering about the canister thing. I really don't understand how you did it. Do you have a pic you could show me? I would like to trash it! What about the vaccum lines or whatever they are?

I just capped off both of the rubber vacuum lines at the Throttle Body area and left the hardened metal line (that is the fuel tank vent line) in place and just pushed it down under the air intake system and outta sight. Be careful with that fuel tank vent line being open to the atmosphere because if you drive the car in a heavy rain it could theoretically let water into the tank. I just don't drive my car any time the weather is ****ty and I have no problems with it. Gotta love outsmartin' the emissions control crap....hehe!!

Also as a bonus, the fuel tank will now be vented directly to the atmosphere and you will not have to worry about it building up a vacuum like some f-bodies tend to do when the canister purge malfunctions and does not allow air into the tank as the fuel gets consumed by the engine. That condition will fry a fuel pump real quick-like due to the increase in work it must do to get the fuel out of the tank.

Oh, and as for how I did it - just unbolt the canister and all of it's brackets, remove the purge solenoid and set it aside, (don't worry about breaking the plastic if you have to - it's goin in the trash shortly!! ) then toss the rest of it (maybe keep the canister around for awhile just incase you feel like putting it back - OK nevermind - toss it). It's really simple and you can get at all of the bolts no problem. Than plug the vacuum lines like I described above. If you drive in the rain sometimes, you may want to route a hose off of the fuel tank vent line to a protected area under the hood so that it doesn't get water in it.

Good luck....Laterzzzzzzzz

I didn't attach my open cone directly to the MAF. I kept the stock rubber hose that normally went from the MAF to the air box (from an 88 TA) and than put a 3" elbow piece of PVC pipe on it that turns the intake back to horizontal and extended it about another 4 inches with PVC pipe which puts the 3" opening, about 10" long K+N cone filter right into the opening of the inner fender (see my comments above about the fresh air flow).

No I don't have any pics of my setup .....yet ....
