most hp under 100$ ?

i recently got 89´GTA with 350. it's so damn slow as you might know so i'd like to make some mods and pay those new hp's virtually nothing

cheap ones:
- gutted cat?
- gutted airbox?
- TPI porting?
- raising fuel pressure by placing coins inside the FPR?
- MAT relocation?
- playing with timing (gas here is at least 95 octane)?

expensive ones:
- TPI airfoil?
- K&N (i think it's a crap compared to its high price)?
- underdrive pulleys(maybe the crank one only)?
- single 2.5" free flow muffler?

do i have any changes to run low 14's without changing cam, heads or headers?

what other mods you'd like to suggest?

If you are looking to do cheap mods, do all the free mods you can. Bypass the TB coolant, remove the smog pump if u have no emission testing where u live and run the shorter belt, purchase a coil, and get the MSD box later, or some sort of ignition system. and place your timing at around 10 degrees, that'll make ur car seem lighter...U can also remove your front sway bar for better weight transfer....Do that only at your OWN risk....Makes the car a bit shaky...but I'm use to it... =)
Anyone else know of anything?? I would look under the "tech articles" as well my friend!

thanks!

i'd like to do only mods which really help. if someone have list of mods how to run 14's, that would be tremendeous help.

GTA fat*ss weight no less than 3800lbs and with driver 4000+lbs i bet i need at least 30hp more?

There is an article in Pontiac Performance magazine that takes a completely stock 1988 GTA and gets it to run low 14's with VERY BASIC mods. Email me and I will scan the article for you and send it. I think this is what you are looking for. JosephAndres@aol.com

Start with a tuneup, if you havent already. Replace the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, etc. Then read the tech articles on this website, starting with this one:

https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/tpimod1.shtml

Assuming you race at a sea level track, your car should aleady run 14's. Here in SoCal, we have several stock or mild modded GTA's running 14's on street tires.

thanks again Zack, Joe and Kevin!

low 14's means much more horse power than stock 230hp? anyway, i cant wait to get in garage and start making all the mods you already told me

i just hope i wont ruin vacuum and screw up the computer. i manage to do it with S-15 truck, coz i changed too radical cam

this time i wont open the whole engine, i rather drive those days than trying to open stucked header bolts

later. 1:20am now...

Exhaust...gut the cat, or just bypass the cat and mufflers with pull out plugs.

Air induction...k&n does help, screens I am not so sure.

Timing, good gas.

I did 14.1s to 14.3s with only a K&N and aftermarket exhaust (no cat.) on 93 octane with f*c*e* up timing.

And your GTA weighs too much...throw out some stuff (spare tire, seats, radio, A/C, ...) Get Rid Of It All...and try washing it.

There is info on the mods I made to my '87 Formula 350 to get it to run 13.94@96.67 on the website below. Also exact pricing for everything I have done to the car. It wasn't exactly cheap, but it was worth it I don't think the free mods will get you into the low 14's
Best of luck

A cat-back exhaust system can be purchased for minimal amount of money and can make some serious gains in your car. This is also a good mod to do since its very easy to install. I would recomend the Hooker cat-back system, I got mine from Jegs for $260, and I installed it myself in about an hour and a half.

If your car is slow then their is something wrong with it and or it needs a tuneup. If you have a dualcat car,you should be running mid-low 14's stock.I ran 14.3 stock with just a tuneup, and am running mid 13's with some free mods and basic boltons. How does your tranny shift? You can go to the site in my sig,and you can see my writeup on what I did to mine for some ideas.

hi Guys!

my GTA is not that slow, in fact it runs whole lot better than any car i had before but i never had car which runs good enough Joe sent me the article and it looked good. i'm not comfortable with idea to remove A/C or such a things, but relocating battery and removing the impact bumpers inside the covers would be nice?

maybe i do cat back by my own replacing original muffler with free flow one. 260$ is too much since exhaust is in good shape (not even rust). Summit catalog doesn't know K&N for firebird, just for camaro... do you have idea how much does it cost?

once i order something from states it takes weeks and i have to pay 30% taxes before i get gadgets out from custom.

previous owner has took off the cat already. i'm not sure though do i need to put it back for annual inspection. hope not.

at least i have to order fuel/air and fuel pressure meters. cyberdynes looks bargains and i can place those to dual pod so i can monitor what's going on while driving.

i try to set stock pressure regulator by placing coins inside it, have u tryed it?

car really weight 3800lbs, coz it's fully loaded with everything i can imagine except roof console =)

roads are still cold and slippery here (this is like canada or alaska i guess) cant test mods, but i can make those

i think this post tread will help many budget modders. i take a look to your mods. great forum!

98_1LE:

i checked your mods and those made lot of sense. IM NOT SHOUTING JUST COMMENTING OK?

Upper plenum ported behind throttle blades
YEP

160º thermostat
NOT TOO EXPENSIVE. HOW'S 180?

Comp Cams polymer Air foil
YEP YEP

Removed MAF screens
NOT SO SURE. IS THAT MANDATORY OR MUST MOD? ANY HARM OF DOING IT?

Bypassed the coolant to the throttle body
HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO SPEND 7$ FOR IT? NICE MOD ANYWAY

Brass insert cap & rotor
AC plugs and Taylor 8mm spiral-core plug wires
OK

HyperTech Thermomaster chip
HOW MUCH THIS HELP? WITH THAT PRICE YOU COULD HAVE PROGRAMMER? AND WE ALL SEEM TO HAVE PC

Relocate the MAT sensor in front of the throttle body
DID YOU USE SOME RELOCATION KIT? WAS IT WORTH?

Set timing to 6º BTDC
YEP YEP

SLP 2OTL muffler/tailpipes
I'LL DO SOMETHING MO CHEAPO

JET adjustable fuel pressure regulator @ 45 psi
COINS WOULD BE NICE DIME OR TWO

good ideas... d*mn! i got to get in garage soon!

i'd add underdrive pulleys. that mod is not so cheap, shorter belt only (for s-15) cost me 60$ here in Finland. i can swear i noticed the difference (voltage dropped at idle) seriously it makes better mileage and add power for sure.

Dude?! whats with that name?!!! FbodySucks?!!!
where do u get the idea that a K/N or an Air foil is expensive? A weeks worth of gas is more expensive than either on of those!

get a k/n, air foil, cut out the MAF screens, put on a Flowmaster 80 series, tune up, and all the rest of the free mods on this page.

if you have the air filter compartment in passenger side fender well, i got an extra K/N for that type, and an extra Air foil i sell them both to ya for like 30 bucks, they r just sitting around and i want to get rid of them. I could send em next time i come home from school if u r interested. E-mail me if u want em. And change that friggin NAME!!!

89' Firebird Formula WS6 L98, MSD 6AL MSD Blaster, Hypertech chip, K/N filter cone, flowmaster 80 series, hypertech air foil, koni shocks, edelbrock trailing arms

more to come soon.....

take it easy! i'll change nick for something else just to make you happy ok? maybe "iluvmustang". anyway, do you know humour type called sarcasm? i wont hang around here if i really dont like the car i just bought at $$$$$.

anyway, i'll share the experiences with all of you once i've done the mods. k&n is not worth of its price, clean paper element is not that much worse. i had k&n in my truck and honestly there was no difference what so ever. only cam and heads did something. nothing much though
