Limiting yourself to under $400 for an intake and cam combo is like saying "why even spend the $400." You won't find an intake for less than $300, and there are only a selection of cams under $200. I mean a LPE Super-Ram intake base is like $520 from Jegs, and I think the TPIS, Edelbrock and AS&M ones are about $450 a piece. My advice to you would be to spend your money on the ZZ4 Cam or, if you want a little more, then LT4 HOT Cam, both cams are under $200. I would save your remaining $200 you have left and put it in the bank until you have another $300 to buy yourself a quality intake base.

Get the $400 and a little more and buy 1 3/4 SLP headers; then get the cam. You'll be happier!

im lookin in summit right now, and all i see is cams under $200, with a few exceptions, as for manifolds, i see them in the $115-$230 price range. all i want to know is either how to match them or what is a good match
and i already have headers, and an exaust

Dude, Your 88 will have a roller cam not a regular flat tappet cam. Summit really does not list TPI parts well. The intakes (Accel, TPIS, EDelbrock) are all going to be around $300+ and the cheapest roller cam I've see in Summit for TPI is around $275. Unless you start looking in the classifieds for used stuff I don't see it happening for $400 with new components.

thats weird i have never seen a new TPI intake for less than $350. or maybe i have been buying form the wrong companies for the past few years. i would buy headers and other little things before i bought a cam and intake, IMO

You also have to take into account the fact that when you change intakes on a TPI system there is more than one piece. The lower base is one unit, normally costing between $300 to $450 new, then you have runners to consider which cost between $250 to $500 new. If your chosen cam is a pretty good breathing design, your stock intake runners may choke off the air flow, which is why you may want new runners to make the most of your camshaft's potential.
Definitely check the classifieds for used intake bases and used runners. Check some of the other linked message boards also, and keep looking. The cheapest I've found for new units was $300 for a new Edelbrock base through an internet group purchase, and $275 for an SLP semi-siamezed runner set. In addition to checking the classified boards, look at group purchase boards. Sometimes you can get in on good deals that way.
