bad gas milage (12mpg) any suggestions?
Hey guys i have an 88 formula 5.0 5 speed. Im getting really bad gas milage and i cant figure out why. Its mixed driving mostly freeway though.
Ive replaced:
Injectors ford racing 19 lb
BBK Adjustable fuel regulator 45 w/o vac
Fuel filter
Fuel pump is a year old
plugs cap rotor
fuel pump relay (recent cold start issue)
IAC (old one broke while cleaning)
Anyway theres a bunch more stuff but those are my main things. everything is set and adjusted properly. It wont idle steady problably 100 to 300 up or down but ill live with it. Im tired of throwing parts at this thing. Also ive been getting a code 36 latley. But other than the crap fuel milage the car runs reallly strong as it should it was rebuilt 8,000 miles ago. Any help is greatly appreciated.
One more thing when i replaced my fuel filter the line coming from the gas tank keept leaking. usually they leak what ever is in the lines but this time it just kept leaking a steady stream of gas. It only had a quarter tank of gas. i unpluged the battery but still kept leaking i swear i thought i was gonna drain the tank. it was just a steady stream of gas coming out for a good seven minutes untill i got bored and put the new filter on, is this normal?

pretty sure Code 36 is for the MAF, replace the MAF and that will probably fix your problem.

Well anytime your check engine light is on your fuel economy is usually not optimal since the vehicle goes into limp home mode. Start there and move forward.

before changing the $200 maf sensor, i would change the maf burnoff and power relays. they cost less that 20 a piece, and can cause all kinds of issues (code 33,34,36) code 36 specifically is the burnoff relay error code. The readings on the maf being off will seriously screw with your air/fuel mixture... causing power loss and poor fuel economy. try those two relays and post your results

I'd be happy to buy more GM parts if they would price them competitivly.

Re: bad gas milage (12mpg) any suggestions?
Hey guys thanks for the great advice. I bought the fords because a lot of people stated they were dependable and I was on the wall about the accell ones till i heard storys about em. Plus they were resonably priced. But hey i did replace the o2 sensor a month ago i forgot to put that in there along with the coolant temp and intake temp sensors. I guess ill replace the relays but before i do that does anyone recomend any paticular one? im just thinking of getting one from kragen for 7 bucks cause money is tight right now and im just throwin parts at it again. Im gonna try and search for a way to test them out though before i run to the parts store that knows me by name already. but ill post my results when i get to it. Thanks again guys.

Re: bad gas milage (12mpg) any suggestions?
Well im really mad but kinda glad at the same time More mad though. All this time searching for a reason to have such a high idle and a crapy one too. I replaced everything you could think of to find the problem plugs, leaks replaced my intake manifold gaskets twice that wasnt fun. Spending a countless amount of time searching probing breakin things in the process. Well today i found a pcv filter just lying around problably my dads he always buys stuff and takes forever to put them on. Anyway i was like hey it would be funny but kinda cool to see if this thing helps anything. Well my cold start issue was back and i noticed my rpm would take forever to come back down once the pedal was let go. So i placed the pcv valve on and It worked The rpms came down faster and smother my idle used to be at 1200 even though my iac and tps were adjusted correct. Now my rpms are at 800 when the car sits for more than 8 sec but average is 1000-900 I was also experiancing a slight hesitation when i was driving in second, not no more and the car fires up like it should. So before you go throwing parts for a rough idle replace the pcv 3 bucks. I fell like such an *** right now.................. Hope this helps someone else outhere. also scroll down this website i found go towards the bottom it explains the pcv vave and things it could do if its malfunctioning... www.magnumproducts.com/faq.htm So now to the parts store to get the correct one for my car and more time readjusting the iac and tps i hope this helps out my mpg cross your fingers.

I've used 3 sets of Ford injectors in chevys and if you look good on the top, one side has Ford oval, and the other side has the Bosch logo. I've always been told Bosch made them.

Crappy Idle Issue
Hey guys im back. Well the pcv helped like i sated earlier but it was just part of the solution. Got kind of embarassed to repost on here after reading what i put, all hail the pcv yay. I know burn me later but anyway the idle was fixed and also the rpms dont stick anymore. Thought it was a sticky throttle but it ended up being my mass air flow wires being striped and grounding out when they touched. it was a nicley hidden place for my grimlin. But put electrical tape and plastic ties so the idle is fixed. But not the MPG.
P.S. in case your wondering how it got stipped they were swinging against the pullys thats the reason for the ties.

Re: bad gas milage (12mpg) any suggestions?
Update: Well i love my car and i just can seem to get my self to get rid of it. Anyway i did some more probing checking up on some member sugestions. I found and did the following:
One: Tire pressure. I had 28 left front tire 23 rf 26.5 LR and 16.5 RR tire!!!!!! I was basically running on a flat tire.So I put 32 up front and 35 out back. I forgot about airing up my back tires and gave it to much gass and did a nice burnout sliding sideways by accident.
Two: Muffler time. It was super blown up. It wasnt blown at the seems but it was really bubbled up and fat. I never replaced it cause i loved the way it sounded. Very soothing. But I felt it was doing more harm than good. So I bought a Hooker aero chamber. Not realizing the 2 1/4 inlet. It was 65 dollars at autozone. But when i realized it i was gonna return it but that day my dad took my car and did me a favor of installing it for me. He said they opened up the inlet with a machine for that extra quarter inch. I was trying to save money but it ended up almost costing the same to pay the muffler guy to install his flowmaster on my car. 50 dollars to resize and install. 115 total. But i like the construction on that muffler good material and flow. The sound was exactly what i wanted not annoying loud but not wisper silent. Very nice.
Three: Engine Probing. I replaced just about everything on this car the only thing i havnt toched is the maf, EGR vave, Selinoid and the computer. So I was trying to test my egr stuff. I dont think i tested right but anyway I found that my vaccume lines were hooked up wrong. The lines on the silenoid were reversed. THe egr shoud hook up to the back and the throtle bodie goes up front. So i corrected them according to the sticker on the inside of the hood.
So Hopefully that corrects my gas mileage some. As soon as i find work ill be taking it in to a shop to do a fulll diagnostic no more throwing parts guessing and wasting money replacing parts that are good.
The only other thing that was pointed out to me by my dad was. When he took it in for the muffler, the guy pointed out that the mid pipe where my cat is at was choped out and reduced to put on a smaller cat. Wich means i have 2.5 pipes out back and 2.5 y pipe i think but the cut out the middle part of my pipe and put in a smaller dinky looking honda pipe so the cat would work? Is this normal shouldnt i have 2.5 all the way through? He said thats a big ristriction and im lossing power do to it. but oh well thats gonna have to wait till i get a pay check. ill repost as soon as i do those two things and get some new numbers in.
Oh and in case your wondering why i keep posting on this, its because i hate doing searches and finding my exact problem only to find no repost as to how they ended up fixing it. So im just throwing up my experiance on this matter so in case someone else is having problems they can do the free checks that i did instead of doing the same mistake i did in wasting money I hope this helps someone out there and if anyone has anymore info or sugestions please post. Did i skip anything or over look something? let us know thanks.
