ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

Two years ago, I swapped in a new 350/350HP with a Mini-Ram intake with a custom TPIS chip. The vehicle has not run right since, and setting the fuel pressure around 47psi and the time at 6 degrees, just doesn't seem right.

I have not been able to find anyone that works on TPI cars in the Chicago area with a dyno that might be able to diagnose and tune my car right???

Any help would be appreciated.

We can help you troubleshoot if you can give details about the motor. What size injectors? Stock of custom chip? Did you check the little things... dist. cap and rotor... so on and so on...

Speed Inc. in Schaumburg. It's about 20 minutes nw of the city. They deal with a lot of lt1 and LS1 cars but they really know their stuff, and can probably help You out.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

Speed inc is not going to be able to help you. Their reputation of blowing up cars on the dyno and being overpirced is true. I have never heard anything good around here from car shows to just people who took thier car there. I live in the nw suburbs of Chicago and your best bet is to ditch the factory computer and go aftermarket or like I am doing and go with the 411 conversion from EFI Connection. There may be like two guys around the area who know anything and I have spent several years looking. by the time you spend 500 plus to havea chip burnt on the dyno you could have been halfway home on an aftermarket sytem depending on what way you go and learn to tune it yourself and with a friend. If you are having major tuning issues i might be able to help you depending on where you live but my best advice is get rid of the tired factory computer that was never meant to handle serious power.

Send me a PM I would be willing to help you out. I have tuned a few mini ram cars and we could use a dyno in Milwaukee to dial in your car.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

Just for your info there is a Dyno tune place in Kenosha, WI which is closer than Milwaukee to you. They wont actually tune your car themselves there because they don't do OBD 1 cars. But they will put your car on the dyno and data log everything for you and then you can use that information to have someone burn a chip for you. That is probably your best bet. The name of the place is Dons auto parts and machine shop.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

Thanks guys for all the help. TPIS says don't stray from 6 degrees and 47 psi. I have bumped up the fuel pressure to 50 psi, but no change. I have a custom prom from TPIS and they have reprogrammed it twice. Motor is a 350 with stock (flow matched TPIS) injectors.

I know one problem is the stock 3.27 rear end that I need to change to a 3.73, but the car is a dog. It wants to die out when I accelerate, even slowly. It will back fire ocassionly and die out. I still have the stock fuel pump also. In the higher RPM range, it runs good and seems to being getting enough fuel. I have a scanner, but other than adjusting the TPS, I'm not too experienced with diagnosing.

TPIS is no help over the phone, and I'm not paying to have them reburn the prom again. I went to a speed shop in Joliet. They bumped up the fuel pressure to 60psi and the timing to 18 degrees. Obviously that didn't help. Any suggestions??? I'm ready to yank the mini-ram and go stock or put a carb on.

I called Speed Inc., and like everyone else they don't work on TPI cars.

I don't know if its the prom, computer, or something else. When TPIS reprogrammed the Prom I sent them a bunch of sensor readings. The new chip helped a little but something is still not right.

I drove my GTA to a few car shows in the last few years, but I can't drive it on a regular basis. This year it would not start, and I found the metal connectors in the distributor to the module broken. I replaced them and adjusted the timing. The timing marks jumps a lot when adjusting.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

For the money your gonna waste, get an Innovate LM1 oc LC1.

Start reading on the DIY PROM board and frequent moates.net and pick up the stuff to do it yourself.

ASSC will still do TPI last time I had a conversation with them.

Lots of tuning does great for WOT, but most still have issues with part throttle and driveability(I realize there are good tuners out there, just not the majority).

Oh yes, mail order tunes blow 98% of the time and the other 2% take time and many datalogs back and forth to make work.

Also, without being 100% sure of electrical and mechanical state of the car, anyone tuning it will be running in circles.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

Yes it is. There are a few different scanning and burning programs out there. Check out the DIY Prom board.
From the info you've given it sure looks like you're running lean. Your injectors are also too small. 22lbr's with 408 lb/ft???? You should need closer to a 30lb injector. Ballpark guess. Don't take that as gospel.
I have 497 lb/ft and was told to up my injectors to 32lb. I haven't datalogged yet so I won't agree or disagree with that as of yet.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

That was my issue prior to having TPIS reburn the prom that my engine was running very lean. TPIS swears that stock 22lb injectors are fine until 450HP, but I have heard the opposite. I know I need to get a better fuel pump, and probably bigger injectors too. Thanks for the info.

Any guys in the Chicago area have prom burning equipment that can help burn a prom for me or willingly to teach me how to burn my own prom?? I don't know where to start as far as what equipment or programs I need.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

Yeah your injector size is off for sure. I would jump it to a 26 at least. In regards to tuning it, I think you should get the basics out of the way. Vacuum check, compression testing, Ignition check, fuel system check. Are you getting black smoke out your tail-pipe at part throttle or off the line? If you have aftermarket heads what sparkplugs are you using? People on this board have found that they lost a tonne of power just by using the wrong lenght. (5/8 vs 3/4) Check with the manifacture for sparkplug specs. Check it out first. Good luck!

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

The engine builder said to go with 26lb injectors, but TPIS insisted that 22lb were more than enough. I trusted them since they are supposed to be the specialists, and I was using their set up and prom. Everything else has checked out fine and no black smoke.

I did realize that when I adjusted the timing this Spring when the connectors to the dist. module broke, I forgot to disconnect the brown wire on the firewall. The timing mark was jumping all around and I bet my timing is way off. I'll have to re time it next weekend. It was running pretty well last Summer. I'm going to upgrade the injectors and get a 3.73 rear end, and hopefully that will get me where I want to be. Thanks for all the help.

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

You should check the timing for sure! Go have your Dist. tested to ensure its good. A side note: You will lose that great TPI feel off the line with a short-runner intake setup like a mini-ram. TPIS really sugested that you keep your 22LBs injectors? Try calling them as if you were just looking for injectors. Tell them your setup and that you were looking at their 26 pound injectors. See what they say. Also, were they informed of the engine setup you have now? It would make sense for them to think you were running a stock setup and recomended the stock injectors. They may have given your chip a tune for that setup also!

Re: ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TPI TUNER IN CHICAGO???

I inquired many times about the injector size since the engine builder insisted I would need larger than 22lb. TPIS had all the info list in the about posts about my engine and car and more. The did the chip twice, and I asked again about the injectors. It is their belief that 22lbs are good for a 450hp 350 engine.

I set my timing at 7, and I got my GTA running good. I have to upgrade the rear end and then the injectors, and it should be running pretty good. Thanks for the help.

Check out www.zr1specialist.com I am pretty sure Marc Heibeck can tune your car with his eyes close. He is a well know tuner in the Corvette ZR1 community. I don't know how far you are from him but he is you best bet. I guarantee it. He's is in Addison, IL. Give him a ring.
