187 Head Castings

Can somebody tell me the specs on the 187 head castings... I'm having them rebuilt on my 305 z28 and would like to know a little bit about them before I get myself taken at the machine shop.. Thanks alot.

The 187 heads were used in 1969 - 70 on 302 and 350 engines. 2.02 & 1.6 valves.... The technology is a little dated but a decent head. I think you might have a problem on a 305 with the valves.

But I just pulled them of my 1991 Z28... They look like there made in this decade, there's even a sensor pluged into one of them.

According to www.mortec.com,

305 heads, 1.84 intake, 1.50 exhaust.

Check down the intake ports and see if it has the swirl vane or if it is open.

If it is open, then there is some performance potential, if there is the swirl, then no.

Any head can be made to perform better, it is a matter of cost.

I don't think the 187's are the best head, but they are probably ok for stock stuff.

Consider the cost of vortec or world products.

Sorry if I got off topic.

Mark.
