Accel Runners

I just picked up a set of Accel runners for $100 still in the box and never mounted. My list of mods is below, but my question is, should I just bolt these on, or port the base while i'm changing the runners, or just put them asside until I get a new motor with heads and cam that will compliment them? any experience in this department will help a lot.

89 Trans am GTA, Magnaflow cat-back, K&N conical air filter, air foil, cooler fan switch and thermostat

Definitely port the base while you've got the upper intake apart. It'll make a huge difference. The runner-to-manifold ports on the stock intake are tiny!

Well, I don't think that you'll gain a whole lot by bolting them on right now, but it's only like 8 bolts per side to pull the runners off - so I'd say slap 'em on.

If you need help with the porting, let me know. I'm porting plenums for $60, gasket matching the runners for $40, and fully porting the GM intake for $275. See http://www.isthq.com/~dan/efi.html for details.

Gotta defray the cost of my car addiction!! Minirammed 383 in the works!

Car: 89 IROC
Engine: Yes
Transmission: That, too.
I would suggest at least gasket matching the plenum and lower intake to match the larger openings of the new runners. It might be tempting to just slap 'em on, but since the runner openings are larger than the stock base openings, the air flow transitioning between the runners and the base would encounter a significant ledge where it tried to enter the base. At the very minimum, that opening in the base where the runner mounts needs to be enlarged enough so that the air flow can smoothly enter the base without turbulently tripping over the diameter transition.

Doing nothing other than installing the Accel runners, netted a 3/10's reduction in 1/4 mile ET at a 2900' altitude dragstrip on my essentially stock '89 Formula 350.

Like others have said I would go ahead and use them. I dont have any before and after test results. But my car did pickup some good power. I ported the plenum at the same time though.

One thing I like about the Accel runners is they are cast not tube style. With tubes you cant really open them up much. The cast runners can be ported out for more flow. With porting they will out flow any non siamesed long tube runner.
