L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

This might be a stupid question. I have heard of people taking the aluminum heads of a L98 Corvette and putting them on a firebird. I have never seen it done or really know of anyone doing it. I just wanted to know if anyone has done it or heard of it. If you have is it worth the time or is it better to do something else.

Re: L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

quite a few people do it. I am putting on a set sometime soon on my 305 when the weather is warmer since there is no space in my garage for the car.
I am doing it to lighten up the car.

i did many back in the early 90s,it is worth the effort however you should have them ported, bowl work etc.these heads have GREAT POTENTIAL look at what lingenfelter has done with them add a small cam with some good lift about 520-560 on a 112 you will like it,of course do the complimenting mods

What are the differences in the heads besides the material they are made of?

Please search. I have posted the info on putting L98 Corvette heads on an F-body, based on my personal experiences, many times. There are three big things you need to watch out for: No EGR passages, the intake bolt holes are the older style, and they're missing one of the accessory bolt holes in front.

L98 Corvettes don't have EGR?

They do, but it is external and plumbed to the intake manifold from the passenger side exhaust manifold.

Also keep in mind the corvette intake manifold also gave a steam outlet for the rear cylinders.

Re: L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

You can buy an EGR kit from Scoggin Dickey. The kit includes a bung to weld to your headers and a tube to connect to your intake manifold.

I recently put different heads on my L98 and the kit worked fine (although it is a bit of trouble to install since the passenger side of a Firebird is so crowded).

Hope this helps.

Well I don't have the factory TPI. I have the Holley Stealth Ram now.

Re: L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

I'm just wondering WHERE to find aluminum L98 heads, especially the standard port ones, not the raised ports.

Guess I'll have to drive up to Orange County some day and look around.

Re: L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

Try looking in the Classifieds at http://www.corvetteforum.com/ Also, they're the exact same as ZZ3/ZZ4 heads. The ZZ4 heads have better springs, though.
I doubt you'd find any in a junkyard though. I think I have seen one 80's Corvette in 10 years of going to the junkyard. You'll have a check a specialty auto salvage yard, and expect to pay big bucks.

The latest ZZ4 heads have a casting number ending in 463. They flow ALOT better than standard old 113 Aluminum Vette heads do.

Re: L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

I looked on ebay an the only ones I can find are a set of new ones for 990.00. Then with a port job it would start really adding up. I think i might just go with a set of aftermarket ones.

Re: L98 Corvette Heads on L98 Firebird

Vortec heads, with the Scoggin-Dickey TPI base, would be a great choice! For that $990 cost, for just their asking price, you could ge6t brand new Vortec heads, a brand new TPI base for them, and make more power, than the L98 aluminum heads could.
