What's the Fuel Pressure Supposed to be at?

Hey guys; I'm finally getting closer to finishing my conversion from a v-6 to a v-8 Mass Air TPI. I began around October of 2000!

Since you guys know WAY more than me, I thought I'd ask what you think the optimum fuel pressure should be on my present set up. Here's what I have:

355 with forged flat-top pistons at around 10.1:1 compression
30 pound Accel Injectors
Hi-Flow Welbrow (Holley) in tank fuel pump
Accel Adjustable FP regulator
Edlebrock TPI set up with Aluminum EGR intake manifold & Hi-Flow Runners
Edlebrock 58mm, 1000CFM twin butterfly throttle body ported to Plenum
Edlebrock Aluminum Heads - Centerbolt "Performers" for late model TPI
Custom grind Crower Cam - .506/.525 gross lift; 114` Lobe Sep; 213/221@.05
Edlebrock tubular exhaust system from headers to tailpipe (with converters)
Accel "hot" coil; I had an MSD 6A but I don't know where it went after the conversion and I was also told that it's overrated. Although I could get one if needed.

I'm not sure what the Fuel Pressure is now, but the car is running a little rich (I usually smell gas when I turn it off and I think that some black smoke comes out the tail pipe when I jump on it). I still need to do a "block learn" on the engine (whatever that means), so that I can have the prom keyed in better - Fast Chip did the burn for me.

Can't think of anything more. Any suggestions, comments, thoughts?

Re: What's the Fuel Pressure Supposed to be at?

Fast Chip does great chips, but if you want someone local to tune it, I'm available.
Fuel pressure at stock is 42lbs at wide open throttle, and about 36lbs when idling. I usually go for 46-48lbs just to get the better spray pattern from a higher fuel pressure. However, if you're already running rich, it would benefit you to turn the pressure down to 40-42lbs until you get the chip reburned.
Doing a "block learn" on the engine sounds like he wants to to hook up a scan tool to it and see what the block learn and integrator settings are. Those settings tell what the computer is doing to adjust the fuel to keep the car at 14.7:1 air fuel ratio for idling and cruising.
You dont list your transmission, but I see that setup putting down about 280-310 horsepower to the wheels and running in the low 13's at the 1/4 mile track at CA Speedway in Fontana.

Re: What's the Fuel Pressure Supposed to be at?

I have a Borg Warner T-5 World Class hooked up to it with a Centerforce dual friction clutch. It used to have a 700R4 automatic until I got sick of burning it and converted it to the T-5 back in 1993'ish (when it was still a 2.8 v-6) I'm also running 3:73s but to a peg-leg; that's going to have to eventually change.

As for the final tuning, depending on how much, I would be interested in having you do it provided that you're close to the Los Angeles area. There's NO ONE out here for these cars; you'd think there'd be at least one shop that would have the right equipment to finalize it, but I'll be damned if I could find it. How can I get in touch with you or you with me?

As for the power, it seems pretty strong even now without the final tuning. It revs up to like 8000 rpm without any effort, but I feel it lose power as it gets up there. I have an '03 Z06 (with no real modifications other than a Preditor race tune) and, although the Camaro is slower, it doesn't seem too far off from it. I figure with a little more creative work on the exhaust and a good tune, I could probably give the Vette a real good run for it's money.

Let me know how to reach you.
