Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
Don't know exact numbers because throughout the years there were small differences in the engine but maybe this will help you:
http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/86recarospecs.html
Don't know about 8 seconds 0-60 because my stock 305TPI definitely can't be that slow. I wouldn't pay attention to that or the quarter mile time, unless someone can chime in and tell me I'm wrong. Which I wouldn't mind, just want the right info :-) Probably is just the guy's car on the site.
Take a look around the site, lots of good reading as well

Yea, boy I hope they're faster than that.
They got faster until '92 which i'm assuming was the fastest year. 225HP?
I'd guess closer to the 6 second 0-60, and low 15 second quarter mile. Once you start tweaking it you can bring it into the 14's pretty easy.

Yeah, I have a 1991 LB9 bone stock w/ 700R4. I was on the innerstate this past friday around 4am and pulled a 0-60 (no one was around for miles, I wouldn't have done so if there was) and I counted () around 6.5 seconds to 60. What year would you be referring to, Jeffscamaro2007?

its what the magazine said.. kinda sad considering now small 6 cylinders can keep up and or beat it. i should kno, lol i have an 87 z28

True, but I only like to believe the 6cyls that can keep up with the strong F-Body's are the regal T-Types and grand nationals
Regaurdless of who's faster or who can cream someone in a race or who is louder or something, the F-Body's hands down have the best stock body and overall looks... It's class

lol well if you read motor trend and hotrod to keep up with whats going on most of the new 4 cylinders(turbo or not) and 6 cylinders have much better 0 to 60 times. it makes me sad to see the numbers everytime i open up a new motor trend magazine to see that they smoke a "high performer" of its day.

Bristol Dragway (where things are known to be slower)
My 1991 Z28, 305, 5-speed G92 that I used to have.
Only mod was K&N filters.
Spun really bad off the line.
60' 2.16
660' 9.350
14.570 @ 90.821
Wished I would have kept that car.
Was a complete freak.

Jeff- Check out www.craigslist.org that's where I found mine for sale. Select your city to the right and search. I got mine for a STEAL, and have seen many going for great prices. Good luck!

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
mine will consistently run 14.0's and 13.9s,ive ripped a few 13.7s,i just did exhaust and a fulle tuneup, and right now im 13.4s
my car hangs with LS1's,beats a few, loses to a few. i have a few videos of this from 2 weeks ago when i went to the dragstrip, best i pulled was a 14.1 on a 2.3 60ft,traction was HORRIBLE,nobody was hooking.
my car has 109k miles,k&n filters,brand new zrateds,clutch,gutted airbox,free mods....and i just did full exhaust.

Iroc88LB9, you ran those times on an LB9 assuming that corresponds with your tag name? Thats awesome, I know you stated all of the mods you did but what in that fell under "Free Mods"? I apologize for this thread getting off topic but since we're here, care to elaborate a tad? I know on http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/spo_t...y_central.html there are mentions of a few really good free mods but was there anything you did in particular that really helped? I already have a cold air intake (a true cold air intake).

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
my 305 TPI never hit a 14 it was stuck in the 15's. had a cam,LT headers, full exhaust, all the free mods and bolt ons you can think of. best time was 15.3 @ 88 with a flowmaster muffler only. started modding it put the cam in it and it went a 15.4 @ 90 mph. if i had to do it all over again i would have sprayed the hell out of it and put a 3200 stall converter in it. i bet it would have went a 13.xx

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
basically,just gutted the airbox,upped the TPS voltage to .60,bumped timing a tad,k&n filters,full exhaust,3.08 gears and a posi...thats all my car has done to it,oh,and a clutch.
i guess one thing on my side is weight,my car only weighs 2900-3100 depending on how much fuel/crap is in it.

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
the 91-92's TPI 5Speeds had the better cam (from the factory) than any of the other's years...
From "seat of the pants", my 91 TPI 5 speed is pretty quick (compared to other 3rd gens I've ridden in)... I just installed some Hooker 2055's jet hot coated, going Friday to the muffler shop to have the Spohn SFC's welded in and 3" Flowmaster 1 in/1out system put in... It sounds NASTY with just the headers and y pipe
I've done other things to the suspension, new Bilstien shocks / struts, STB, wonder bar, new LCA's and Panhard bar, new poly end links front and rear, new poly trans mount and torque arm bushing, etc...
Before many of he upgrades, you'd floor it and it would spin, now it grabs, front end goes up and it goes! Motor wise, not much, K&N, air foil, throttle bypass, new plugs, msd wires, cap and rotor... waiting to go in, MSD digital ignition and I'm probably gonna get that NSVRam so I can update the programming in the car...
After that, I'll wait til the motor dies before doing much more with it... it's plenty fun now

5 speed is that much quicker then a auto?
I ran a 14.8 with just whats in my sig minus the air foil and plenum porting. I have a LB9/auto/3.23 posi and my tranny shifts at 4K rpms for some reason. So, from what I am gathering here I could possibly get into the low 14 range with just a tranny swap? This thread makes me want to put a 5 speed in my car.

Well then I don't know what the heck is wrong with my car as it is an '85 Z28 with an LB9/700r4 and it runs 16.8 @85 at the fastest.

My 91 Z would run mid 14's all day long with exaust, k&n replacements, the dreaded jet stage 2 chip, and a stage 2 trans with 2400 lock up stall from the guys at bowtie. Sheet claimed 2:73 gear but i think it was more of a 3:08 feeling but never counted the teeth. Had some good times in that car.

Could you get a 85 thru 87 Z28 with TPI? I always thought you had to get the Iroc-z package to get TPI in those years?

The TPI was only optioned in the IROC-Z's for said years.
Speaking of which, what kind of times are stock 5.7 liter TPI's running?

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
I'm positive It's an LB9. I even have the original RPO codes and I've double checked.
TPI was introduced in '85 as was available for both the Z28 and IROC-Z. This was also one of the best years for the LB9 as it had a hotter cam that rated the engine at 215 hp. Subsequent years had a lower output until '90 when they switched to speed density.
I'm going to check and replace the cap, coil, and rotor soon. As well as check the TPS voltage and injectors (previous owner said he replaced them). The engine has always had a sort of weird idle to it. Sounds like it is kind of cutting out after each revolution. I can keep a beat with it, it is that noticeable.
It's kind of a let down as my car already has 3.23 gears so I can't blame it on that. My buddy's TBI Firebird can post times over half a second quicker than my Camaro.

85 was the worst year for TPI,because of the 870 ECM,granted it did have the larger cam,but it was only available with an automatic.
86 was just downright horrible because of cam selection.
87+ is when they exceeded 85 in both HP,and reliability.
i beleive my 88 is rated 220hp.

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
my mistake. Although I did forget to state that I was talking about LB9/700r4 combination. You are right about the 85 ECM being the worst as it can only supply diagnostic data at 8192 BAUD. I was trying to make the point that if I were to have the same car at a later year it would/should (theoretically) be slower off the showroom floor. I apologize for my lack of specific detail.

oh and btw...i had an 85 z28,it was constantly plauged with problems because of the ECM,and the seperate burnoff module, but anyways, when that car felt like running, she ran DAMN hard,it ran anywhere from 14.40s to 17.70s,the mph ranged from a best of 97,to the worst at 77 i beleive. when it caught fire i gave up on it.
the 88 i have now, nobody beleives the thing, the WORST that car has ran was a 15.1,that was with a 2.5 60 ft,spinning first AND second.
right now its got a best of 13.4,hopefully going to the track this coming sunday to try out the new gears and et streets!

Hooked alright. I was riding the clutch a bit to keep from breaking loose. Also was hot lapping and best time was on the 5th run. Was trying not to kill it as I had to drive tow hours back home. Most of the "stock" 350's were only in the 14.5's. Hot day and heavy air

LOL.....not everything is about the 1/4 mile. I attend close to 20 car shows a year. But once I get my tranny done and stall, I want to try it. Also I have SFC and Sportline springs to put on this year also.

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
Well my Camaro being an '85 TPI 305 with a 700r4 and a 3.23 posi rain a best of 15.597 @ 87 mph. My best 60' time was 2.177. My engine is in need of a tune up and has 139,xxx miles on it.
engine is stock except for a couple free mods:
TB bypass, AIR delete, A/C delete, rear seat delete, gutted cat, 2.5" ARP cat back exhaust, removed intake baffles, and descreened MAF. I'm assuming that a T-5 car would run a couple of tenths faster than me.

basically,just gutted the airbox,upped the TPS voltage to .60,bumped timing a tad,k&n filters,full exhaust,3.08 gears and a posi...thats all my car has done to it,oh,and a clutch.
i guess one thing on my side is weight,my car only weighs 2900-3100 depending on how much fuel/crap is in it.

what were your trap speeds?
Also, for your car to run 13.4 in the 1/4 with a race weight of 3100lbs (which includes you in the car) you will need 250rwhp.
265rwhp if you and the car weigh 3250lbs.
I can't see you getting over 80rwhp gain doing some free mods, full exhaust and a filter.
215hp is your rated power at the Flywheel for your 88 T5 car, which is about 185rwhp.
here, you can play with this cool calculator. Seems pretty accurate since I put in my race weight and rwhp for my 86 Trans Am T5 LG4 car, 3520lbs with me in it, 208.5rwhp.

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
I am raising the on this one until I see a confirmed video of your high 13 sec passes and pics of your totally stripped/gutted car to get it down under 3K lbs.

.030 over 305{basic rebuild} stock CR,stock camshaft
heres a video against a 02 ss 6spd,watch close enough and you can see him start SPRAYING to get ahead of me,he had me by 2 cars on that race, and i RAPED him outta the hole launching softly.
it woulda been better had you simply asked, instead of calling BS.
i will gladly get around to scanning the slip and posting it this weekend if yall need to see slips, the cars going to street car chaos on the 25th.
or,lurk around the SVT forum, mainly the chicagoland streetracing boards....quite a few mustang owners are pissed that they got stomped.
oh,and as far as being TOTALLY stripped....i think not,the ONLY thing my car doesnt have...is backseats,i took those out mainly jsut to keep people from asking for "rides",and i guess my headliner doesnt count since i just took it out,and im waiting for a replacement since mine was sagging horribly.

That video shows you launching first and the LS1 passing you at about the 330 and it doesn't show a time. I see no rapage on the launch.
here is vid of me raping an LS1

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
Don't take offense to Zepher's comments cause I was thinking the same thing , its hard to believe your car runs that fast, but anything is possible.......what were your 60" times? Stock heads yet? No porting what so ever done to your intake/heads/TPI? I would at least think you are spraying it to run a 13.4 with a 305.
How much did your exhaust cut-out help you? I was thinking of getting one.

Re: How fast is a 305 tpi?
You must be cutting a darn good 60" time, running NOS, and have a different cam at the very least. I just don't see any other way to make your "stock 305 TPI" run 13.4 in the quarter mile.
