What cam 305?

I have a 91 with a 305 tpi. What would be a good cam for a stock engine?
How well would a stock lt1 cam work with 305 tpi? Any input would be appreciated

Re: What cam 305?

I used the xe258hr10 cam.

Worked great, good power but had to screw with the idle a abit.

What mods do you have?

Re: What cam 305?

Right now its all stock. I was thinking of adding headers and 3.73 gears, and a chip. Soon or later i want to put in a 350 or ls1. So for now i want to try adding simple mods.

So those 8sec. times are with the 305 or 383?

8.21sec with the 305 with a 125hp shot of nitrous.

My 383 will be ready in a couple months.

Re: What cam 305?

If you're planning on moving on up to an LS1, you wont wanna do the headers or a chip because I'm pretty sure both would then be useless. They'd work with a 350, but not an LS1. Don't buy chips anyways, they'll never work anywhere near as good as a getting your prom tuned specifically for your car.

I've got a 305 and I still don't know which way to go with it. Might step up to a 350 or might just stay with the 305 and spend most of my money on my '79 I'm restoring. But for now I'm upgrading stuff that would be compatible with a 350. Full exhaust, suspension, ignition compnents. All pretty basic stuff which would work on wither a 305 or a 350. If your car is stock right now though. I'd say tune up with new plugs, wires, coil, filter then full exhaust; headers to tips.

And as LB9GTA said, NOS would give it a good kick too. Is your car stick or auto?

Re: What cam 305?

Which cam do you have now? If you have a G92 car, your cam is not that different than an LT1 cam anyway,

The 305 has that same stroke as the 350, that helps the engine absorb more of the cam's timing. Up to 210 degrees on the intake can be run and the computer would be OK with it, but would still benefit from PROM tuning. More radical LSA would limit the computer's ability to cope on its own.

Realistically, any cam with more than 210 degrees intake duration is going against the 305's design and will really kill drivability in the search for a little more power.

Most of the roller cams on the market today are high lift with a lot of ramp to them, so you had better make sure your springs are up to the task. I wouldn't risk stock springs on any cam swap anyway, especially if they are 15 years old.
