Tranny swap or Vin swap?
I bought my 88 trans-am from a crappy place. The vin numbers say that it is a 350 w/ auto, my car has a five speed. What would be easier for a person to do, change vin's on a stolen car or swap tranny's and put a t-5 on a 350 tpi? Besides a flowmaster it is stock, that i can tell. My car seems pretty fast, I have yet been able to race a real iroc-z or gta to compare power. What do you guy's think?

Re: Tranny swap or Vin swap?
There was a recent thread with a similar situation. After TONS and TONS of debate, there was still no real answer as to what had been done.
More than likely, it's a trans swap. I have NO WAY of knowing of course, but it's not uncommon.

remove the console shift plate and look at the floorpan to see if its a factory hole or if its been cut out for the 5 speed. also, the vin number is on a sticker on just asbout every part of the car (deck lid, fenders doors, inside console).

Inside the rear quarters, on the fenders, hood and doors even the front and rear bumper covers there were V.I.N. stickers are any of these still present? And if you look at the hole in the floor where the shifter comes through does it look like it was cut out when the floor pan was stamped. Or was it cut out kinda roughly.

I'll check all of those places tonight. The shift light does work, does tell you something? I know you can tell the size of the motor by the looking @ the top of the flange at the back of the motor, has any been able to see that while motor is still in the car?
