code 36, burnoff relay
I just got this code...... i got it a LONG time ago and i replaced the relay and the harness plug, and it fixed the problem.
What should i do to diagnose this problem? i dont want to replace the relay/harness again....... the MAF sensor is new, i just dont know what to do. if someone has some diagnostic pages, please post them. thanks!

Power for MAF burn off is provided by the ECM/Fuel Pump fuse. It is routed through the Normally Open contacts of the MAF burn off relay, then through the Normally Closed contacts of the MAF power relay.
If the MAF power relay N.C. contacts are not intact, the burn off cycle will fail.
If the MAF power relay N.C. contacts are not intact, the burn off cycle will fail.

i'm actually a bit confused as to what components go into the burnoff circuit and where they can be located in my engine bay so i can look at them....... sorry could someone please explain?

i got that code coming up alot. i took it to a guy spent 15 mins on it and all he did was take the burn off relay out. the maf power relay does the same thing as the burn off. made the car run perfect again. he said the burn off relay was siezed, and htey dont make a replacement for it.

ok, but this is just a condition of me not knowing the location of the components in the engine bay. i know that the maf burnoff/fuel pump relay is on the firewall on the drivers side, and it is square, but i dont know where the MAF power relay is could you tell me?
also which one did he remove on your car? the square one on the firewall? and then the car ran perfect? if so, that makes no sense, without that relay my fuel pump doesnt work

Removing a relay is not an option, unless it gets replaced. While OEM relays may not be available any longer, aftermarket relays are still available and will work just fine.
The relays should be arranged something like this:
The relays may not be mounted in that exact order, and the only way to verify which relay is which is by the wire colors in the connector. You have the diagram posted above.

MAF BURNOFF RELAY: ORNG, ORNG, BLK, BLU > 8333 (14089936)
MAF POWER RELAY: ORNG, BLU, BLK/WHT, TAN/WHT, RED > 8336 (14089936)
FUEL PUMP RELAY: BLK/WHT, ORNG, TAN/WHT, GRN/WHT, RED > (10094701) R2004.3-1
are these the correct wires to the correct relays? i want to know before i start to troubleshoot my code 36, thanks!

i think i have the same problem. My car was acting up so brought it to the shop about 5 months ago and they fixed it but its acting up again. Im thinking that something else was wrong and it broke the new burnoff relay that they put in. Is there a way of testing the MAF relay and burnoff relay? Something tells me they are both bad.

hope that helps, i went through it and i came to the conclusion that there was something worng with my ECM so i ended up changing the prom, seemed to have fixed the problem........ i think i had a defective prom in there b/c the code came on right after i changed it, and i have 2 different prom's

Hmmm well i have a relatively new ECM and prom so i dont think they are the problem. Ill have to do some more investigating when im actually near the car. Thanks

ugh ok, the code is back and it seems like its here to stay... lets go over a few things i've checked:
12 volts on both 340 CKTS on MAF burnoff relay?: OK
12 volts on 994 and 993 on MAF sensor when BLK900 on bunoff relay is manually grounded: OK
Wires ok? yes, i checked the BLK900 all the way to the ECM and grounded it there, and i had power on the MAF sensor, so theres nothing wrong with THAT wire....... and as i said i've checked the 2 orange 340 CKTS. the only wire i havent done much with is the BLU 994 wire that goes on terminal A of the MAF bunoff relay, Terminal D on the MAF sensor, and Terminal C on the MAF power relay, but it is a good ground when my ignition is turned on......
any other ideas would be GREATLY appreciated...... i know the relay is fine considering while its plugged in, and i ground 900 manually, i have power on the MAF sensor terminals D and E

Bringing this back from the dead..my 86 iroc got wrecked (never let your mom drive your camaro) and i am the proud new owner of a 88 iroc now. Only problem is that i am getting code 36 for the burnoff relay. Im going to start by replacing it and seeing what happens but another question is how do i tighten the connections in the plug? I can actually see the copper wire on a few of them and would like to tighten them up but cant see how.

hey man, no sweat! my problem was actually solved, i had a bad ECM once again haha........ i think my car has insufficient voltage, and i keep killing them, and every time one dies, it throws a funky code that makes no sense........ but anyway, i ended up doing a LOT of research about that code, so if changing the relay doesnt work, let me know b/c i have a lot of resources! later man, good luck

Well here is another question. Which relay is which on my car? There is a picture of your cars relays up above and the burnoff relay is at the far right. The relays look the same as mine but the colors of the wires differ. I just went out and checked and every one of the three relays on my firewall has two orange wires to it along with other colors. Not sure what to make of that. Did you ever find out if the connectors were going to the right relays on your car?
And anyone know how to tighten the connections in the plug?

Well just to update everyone a little i replaced the burnoff relay and got rid of the code 36. Computer is not putting out any codes. But the car is still not idling smoothly and will die if i put it in gear and dont start to give it gas imediately. Im going to go out on a limb here and assume its something stupid. Im replacing the spark plug wires as someone put regular wires on this car and they are hitting the headers at certain places. Im sure that isnt helping matters. While im in there im replacing the spark plugs. I already did the drivers side which wasnt all that bad and it seems to be running better. Not sure though till i do the passenger side. Wish me luck.

Well letting everyone know that changing the plug wires and plugs solved my stalling out problem when coming to stops. It will stall if i put it in park and let it idle for a few then back into drive or reverse but im going to live with that since this is a modified car and i dont expect it to run flawlessly.
