just a thought

I am getting the following:
87 camero 305 auto with the posi rear (think it is the 190hp engine) 700r and rear axle for a project.

guy is giving me a gm Goodwrench 350 4bolt crate motor as well as he needs his storage cleaned out and has lost intrest. the 350 was in a old truck has 40k on it.

The guy has a wealth of knowledge and he says this can be done ... can anyone confirm?

I want to take the 305 heads and put them on the 350 increasing comp a little bit but able to bolt on TPI fuel injection to the 350.

The GM crate motor I believe is a 290hp base engine and that is carbed .... do you think this setup will increase to a 350hp/350tq range or if it can be done?

thank you...

I'm no expert, but you're not going to add 60hp by swapping on 305 heads (with smaller valves and more valve shrouding) and a little more compression. You may get really good throttle response though. You won't get another 60hp with TPI either. You should see an increase in lower/mid torque due to the TPI runners.

Use the heads on the crate motor. As long as they are not vortec, the TPI manifold will bolt on.

yes...you may need to slightly modify some bolt holes depending on the year but they will fit as long as they aren't vortec heads.

you will need to get larger injectors and a custom tune. you will need to know the exact cam profile for the tune.

you may reach 310-315hp and the torque number may be closer to 350.

Would it be worth doing the TPI intake swap to the 350 with a LT1 cam and port the stock heads on the 350? or for the same pricing could I get the same out of the 305?

thank you!

Re: just a thought

I did just this when I was a poor college kid. Blew up a 305, had a 350 block available.

Ended up a 355 with SLP cam under LB9 heads. Did headers, SLP runners, MSD stuff, etc into a built 700R4 with 2500 RPM Stall converter to the original 2.77 rear
It was on Par with with LT1 6-speeds of the day. Might have actually been able to pull a fender on one if I had been able to get a 3.4X gear in there.

Also today with the accessibility to tuning with a bit more knowledge I think I could have taken that combo further... but why? I wouldn't go that route again.
