EGR OR NOT!!!

If you are going to eliminate the egr system, make sure you have no detination.I would suggest keeping it if I were you.You may have to play with the timing and also the check engine light that will come on.Thats if you eliminate it.It was put on there for good reason.

Get rid of it, tune it out of your prom. I have elimated this carbon catching, makes your intake greasy nasty POS emissions device from several of my cars with no ill affects whatsoever.

my vote is to keep it.
a properly working EGR system does not cost any power, & can increase fuel mileage.
without my EGR valve, i have to run premium gas, with it, regular works just fine with less ping.
add to the fact it also helps keep the air you breath cleaner, & sooner or later, you'll have emissions testing in your area.
BTW Jetmeck, the sludge you get in your intake isn't from the EGR, its from the PCV system.

On the '87, the egr system did hurt power a little as it wasnt as refined a system as later years. It dumps exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber to be reburned which if your after little bits of power, it would affect. However, if the car is almost completely stock aside from an egr elimination, than it shouldnt hurt leaving it in there.

I dont have much of a choice but to get rid of it, thank TPIS for it. Just gotta burn a prom to replace the code. One question pops into mind though, if you eliminate the EGR system, the vacuum hose leads from the EGR solenoid and goes to the EGR valve and the charcoal canister, if removing the EGR system from the prom will the charcoal canister ever function if it does not kick on the EGR solenoid? Had this one on my mind for a while now.
