Suggested Mods for L98 ?!
Hi!
I'm new in here. My name is Alex, i live in Germany and I own a 1988 Pontiac TransAM 350cui L98 TPI.
2 weeks ago my car was on the dyno. 213hp / 170rwhp. vmax 230kph @ 5010upm. ( 2.73 rear axle ).
So I decided to spend some money on various modifications.
Actually I have installed a Flowmaster 80's Series Catback, a Hypertech Power Chip and a K&N Replacement Air filter.
The next investments will be some headers, i think i'll take hookers super competition with ceramic coating.
I need some new hydroroller lifters ( they knock a little bit when engine is cold ). so i'll want to use a new camshaft too.
does anyone knows a good cam+lifter kit which is working well with the hypertech / or stock chip ?
what improvements in hp/torque could be made?
next, i want to have some more rpm. about 1000rpm more would be great ( 6000rpm ~> 275kph@3rd gear *g* wanna kill some porsche's
next'years modifications should be: new heads, new intake (super ram or something like this).
hope my english is good enough!!!
thanks in advance!
btw: sorry for don't using search so many threads....
greets
alex

as far as the cam that should be the last thing you so whoever helps you with it has all the specs to work with

the 22lb injectors will eb fine for you , they handle more hp than you have . Headers and an adjustable fuel regulator . Also I recomend getting SFC's( sub frame connectors) really stiffens up the car alot. Yes get some gears for sure

I agree with D, the FIRST modifications you should do should be ones to keep the car nice and tight. Subframe connectors, a stut tower brace, and a wonder bar/sterring brace (from TDS on here). THEN get your headers. After these you can sit down and plan your next round of mods. It also gives you some time to decide on your setup. Do it the way you really want the first time, save money down the road. (eg. Miniram, Superram, Long tube runner, Holley Stealthram, First LTR, carb, whatever) Same for heads.
But the mods I mentioned are done right the first time. And should be done FIRST.

Don't worry about your English too much, a lot of us English speakers either can't or won't take the time to type/spell correctly.
As far as mods go, the suggestions so far are right on target, start with stuff that will work with anything you will do later on (for example the chassiss upgrades and headers). Your cam should come last, as you want to match it to the rest of your set up. Something that wasn't mentiond above is that the stock long tube runner intake limits the high rpm hp ability of the motor. It is great for low and mid range, but it simply doesn't have the ability to flow enough air to make lots of top end power.
Look through here for a bunch of great info. If you want to keep the stock TPI setup, but want higher rpms, these two threads should be looked at 1 and 2
Hope these help, and welcome to the boards

hmm, i think i don't want to swap my gears.
i usually drive at speeds between 90 and 110mph ( highway / autobahn ).
i think this is way faster than allowed in the u.s.
cutting off vmax is not acceptable for me

your gears are fine for top speed kinda driving.. for me 100mph in overdrive is like 3000ish rpms which is plenty high enough and i have 3.27 gears. 2.73's will be fine for your car.
what u need to do is headers for sure. look into some underdrive pulleys and electric water pump.
if you need new lifters, then look to get some 1.6 ratio roller rocker arms. i wouldnt swap out a cam yet... as it takes alot of tuning to get it to work right. if you want, look into tryin to get comp cams computer cam..210/220 and get springs and stuff to match the extra big lift. else get the next step down cam.. i forget the specs. another good option is the ZZ4 cam that comes outta the ZZ4 GM crate motors. also needs springs to handle the lift. the stocker Lt1 and LT4 cams are also good mild replacement cams. u should see 10-15 hp above stock cam with those with 1.6 rocker arms.
as far as more rpms... ditch the TPI setup and go holley stealth ram or miniram if you can get those intakes over in germany. they will give you more top end. TPI will never beable to get near 6000rpms.
those mods should help you get that car moving fairly well. if you want some more bottom end acceleration, look into gettin a torque converter for that trans. it will get u off the line quicker. 2500-2800 stall is nice for TPI. i'd go 2600 with 2.73 gears even tho i had 2800 with my 2.77s. i think its better for abit less stall on those gears.
