new cam for 1986 305
ive been searching for info here and looking for general info on replacing the cam in my 86 IROC 305 TPI 100% factory stock.
I talked with a friend that works for automotive engineering, he suggested using a CompCam # 252AH-12 (252/260 252/112) he stated its the biggest i can go without changing anything from stock, which I dont want to.
Has anyone used this cam in their stock 305 and did you like the results? Im looking for a little more HP of the line, its going to be a daily driver and I dont race or anything like that, I had an 89 IROC wit hte same motor and it had a lot more punch than this one, I found out that this model has the "peanut" cam and it sucks.
also does anyone know the specs on the cam in the 86 305 so I can at least compare it to what I will put in?
Thanx

The specs on the peanut are on the main page, its thirgen.org/newdesign/faq or something like that. In any case, its tiny and not worth talking about.
I was running a couple different cams in my 86, a 204/214 .420/.443 and then a 212/212 .444/.444. The first ran better than the second IMO. Comp also makes a 212/218 that would be my first choice at this point in time.
Ran both those on a stock chip. The one you posted isnt much different than the 85TPI/L69 HO cam so your results will be according to that.

thanx, i found the specs on it. at least i have something to compare to. i was mostly looking to see if someone here had the same setup with the same cams and there results, I dont want it to feel like im in a 4 wheel harley sitting at idle...just a bit more punch than it has or lacks..........

Melling MTC1 cam kit, you can get it at Autozone cheap. It has the 204*@ .050" intake and 214*@.050" exhasut, .422" intake and .444" exhaust.

Listen to MADMAX, get the comp cams xe256h-12. If your going to go to the trouble of swaping cams you might as well maximize your gains and this is by no means a wild cam.

I have the Comp Cams Extreme Energy XR269HR grind. Went in great and runs very smoothly. Ran very well w/ a hypertech chip.
The scanner was showing a lean condition, but I did the heads at the same time and attribute it to that.
