Chip out of my piston

i got my motor pulled out, took the intake off, took the oil pan off and stuff, and in the bottom of the oil pan i found 3 chucks of metal...i was like uh ohh...then i looked further into it, and on the bottom of one of my pistons, it goes down into like a skinny taper piece, and that piece just broke right off...its on the very bottom of the piston, and it looks like it might not affect performance, but its still a concern...the cylinder wall from what i could feel had no scars or anythign on them....what do you guys think? its supposed to be a low mileage vette motor...do you guys think i should be concerned about this or what?

uhhhh.....yeah!!! I would find out exactly what happened and fix this problem before you put the motor back in action. If you have peices of pistons missing, your motor will be out of ballance and it will prolly destroy itself causing total destruction. YOU DO NOT WANT TO RUN THE ENGINE THIS WAY. Trust me. You should replace the broke piston, flush the metal shavings out of the engine, check main and rod bearings and check for cyl scars or you will face worse problems when you get the motor running.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

if you found pieces of metal in your motor, and it sounds like a piston skirt, youve got problems. pistons don't just commit suicide

You can get a stock cast piston for as little as fifteen bucks. You really need to find out why the skirt broke in the first place, liek possible flyweight interference, or cap bolts stitting too high, etcetera. Once you determine what caused the problem in the first place, you should have a clearer idea of what your next step(s) is.

When that's all done, plan on balancing the entire thing. You can do it yourself if you have some equipment.
