EGR valve replacement

How much of the TPI plumbing and such needs to be disassembled in order to replace the EGR valve? Any hints on how to do this?

Thanks.

me and traviz would have no problem giving you a hand one day to do it...its pretty simple.. you just have to take off the plenium...and if you dont like working in cramped spaces the runners...

I may take you up on that. Do I need to change the EGR solenoid at the same time? The friggin car failed smog with high NOx, so the EGR is f-ed up. I may have to replace the cat as well. I can get a Carsound 3" replacement for about $70 on the net. That's way cheaper than the local ripoff muffler joints.

Man you should have heard that thing on the smog dyno, he did the 25 mph test in 2nd gear, what a friggin racket from the exhaust.

Both you 2 work at Kragen, no? What's the correct part number for the valve?

get the neihoff...they use rochester parts which is genuine gm for cheaper, also dont buy it unless you know the right part there are 3 types of egr valves positive pressure, negative pressure, and universal. it may not be a bad egr it could be just a clogged egr port. or bad o2 sensor.

hehe im starting to pick up on this stuff at work....i work for bennie smog diagnostic specialists...

if you bring your car in i can get you a deal on diagnosis

pull your egr off before purchasing a new one, like eric said, the port could just be built up with carbons.

plus at kragen they can only identify by the part # printed on the egr itself, so you will need to know that.

oh ya if you do need the egr, let me get it for ya, i can get you 25% off.

OK, so how long (how many hours) does it take to remove the EGR valve, check it, replace if needed, and clean the carbon out of the ports, and put it all back together and get it running again? Any special tools needed?

And where's this smog test place you work at? I guess I need to do a pre-test to see how much improvement the repairs have made.

no no no no no no no no.... did i mention NO..

do not get ANYTHING OTHER than the ACDelco EGR.. the Neihof unit has a bigger hole, plus the pin that goes in the manifold is different, and you have to use selected washers that come with the kit..

i had one of these and it always gave me code 32.. i recently changed to a GM ACdelco unit and its now back to normal.

i got mine from GM parts direct for 42$ shipped, that was 1 week ago.. you need to make sure you specify if its a 305 or 350.. there is a big difference..

if you want further proof.. send a PM to DynoDon on this board.. i showed him the difference between the 2.. also he can tell you about his smog experience using a 305 EGR on a 350.. not good.

a lot of people refer to rochester as rottenchester.

just because it fits, doesnt mean it works right...

the hole where the rubber tube goes... is larger on the "neihof".. we compaired them... so what does that mean? its pulling more exhaust gas. trust me on this one. i have an extra original GM EGR for a 92 350.. i can take a picture, and you can compair it.

have my orginal and the neihoff ill show you pics that they are the exact same... so that may be true for the older neihoffs but not the new ones

The car is an 88 IROC with the LB9. It's a TPI 305.

I can handle paying maybe $50 for the part, but I sure as hell don't want to blow $100 to $150 at a ripoff dealer parts counter. Moreover, I sure as hell don't want to have to wait 2 weeks for a mailorder part to arrive. Once I pull the TPI apart to get the correct part number off the original valve, I want to be able to jump into the wife's car and run down to some store and buy a new one that same day, at a reasonable price.

Bollocks! Nobody had the **** in stock. We went to every parts house in town, even the local GM dealer. Special order from everywhere, the GM guy said it would take a week to get the part in. F- that, a week my ****.

We ended up ordering from Kragen, be here tomorrow. Thanks to Trav for his help and driving me all over. We'll put away some suds tomorrow after the thing is running again. I gotta show you what a T5 equipped car is like! I think you may be surprised at the little LB9.

OK, what is that small, 1-wire sensor that mounts into the base of the EGR valve?
