Ceramic coated plenum and runners?

Has anybody done or heard of doing it?What benefits and or drawbacks would there be?I am thinking of port matching the base and runners and then having them coated inside and out.I'd like them to match the headers.

I think that coating the intake would be bad. The intake should be able to dissapate heat, but ceramic coating would hold it in. Cooler air means denser air, and that means a better, more complete burn. High volumetric efficiency= higher horsepower. If you want it to match, I'd recommend painting it to match.

I don't know how much difference there is between ceramic and powder coating, but mine are powder coated and I really couldn't tell any difference after I had it done.

No, ceramic coating would keep heat out. Maybe not enough to make a noticeable difference though.

That what I had originally planned on doing to mine but the guy that did mine said the chrome powder coat tended to yellow, because he had to clear it afterwards. I am kinda glad at with a different color (if black is considered a color)

My ported SuperRam plenum, runners, and intake were ll ceramic coated when I got them (already ported by then). he idea is to keep the heat out. Does it really have any beneift? I honestly doubt it, personally. I know the top lid still gets PLENTY warm.....

That guy would be right..! If you Dont clear coat a mirror silver or almost chrome powdercoat.

1. UV from sunlight will make it go dull. Over time turn grey.

2. if you dont clear it, and get grease, grime etc on it. Which all will happen. and You goto clean it. You literlly run the chrome particles outa the material and leave a black spot.

3.. If you clear it it dullls to a silverish look.

BTW that setup looks great. Who did the powdercoating.

Thanks,

It was just some local guy at a sign company. He was one of those "good ole boys." Charged $50 for the plenum, runners, and all accessory brackets.

I have had pics of your engine on my CarDomain site as the engine I most wanted to emulate since the day I set the site up. I never knew whose engine it was as I got the pic out of a thread here. Do you have some more pics of it? That is one KILLER looking setup. Do you mind if I copy it a little????

Edit - I found your pics on your web site.....thanks...

Another benefit of the ceramic coating is that since it is so smooth, it will prevent carbon buildup from forming in the plenum and runners.

Black is a color and unfortunately black will either dissipate heat very well or absorb heat very well, depending on the surroundings. Obviously in the engine bay with the cooler air on the inside and warmer air/environement on the outside it's going to absorb heat, you gotta hate that!

Black is no different than any other color in the abscense of light (with the hood closed).

....unless theres something different in the formula of black power coat which I'm unaware of.

I measured a significant difference in intake air temperatures after ceramic coating my plenum and runners.

At the track between runs from heatsoaking when the engine is off and the car is parked my intake air temp would climb into the 130-140 range. After coating it would only get as high as 110-120.

There is a direct impact on performance from the lower temps.

I have talked to a company that does ceramic coating for many of the nascar teams. Believe it or not, the car will run a little cooler dispite with coating is suppose to do. I read some questions of it turning yellow. The only thing that will happen is a tarnished discoloration where the runners curve to the intake. This is caused by the bending of the metal to curve it, not the coating on the metal. Keep in mind that true ceramic coating is a process that creates a bond to the metal that permainate and cannot be just stripped off as paint or powder coating can. It leaves a finish that is paintable and in most cases, it will resist all the harmful affects of oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, etc. This is an excellent addition to any motor!
