zz4 cam tpi
How would i go sliding a zz4 cam into my std 88 GTA?
Will the springs handle the extra lift?
What will the computer think?
How much power with the tpi?
Does anyone have one with a HSR, how much power does that make?
I can get one cheap is why im asking
Thanks for your help.

stock spring won't handle any non-stock cam. You'd probably be pushing it with an lt1 cam and 1.6 rockers. I can't seem to find my SDPC catalog around here, but I seem to remember the zz4 having .525 lift on the exhuastk... I got away with just over .500 lift on stock heads (its was .503 lift) but the retainers were very close to the valve guides. There's only one way to find out (the hard way), but I'm guessing its too much lift for your stock heads.

I have the ZZ4 cam in my L98.
Although some people have gotten away with stock springs, you should NOT try it. I have the LT4 springs in mine. People have been shot in the head and lived too, but ya wouldn't try to do it yourself!
The ZZ4 cam is great for a TPI motor. Too much more cam is too much for the TPI, and an aftermarket intake will require more cam. I'm planning on installing an aftermarket long tube set-up, so we'll see how that goes.
I'm currently running the ZZ4 cam, stock TPI, stock rebuilt heads with only a valve job and the LT4's. I also have SLP 1.75" headers and a hooker exhaust flowin' through a high flow cat. At the moment I have no dyno numbers, but its no comparison. Gobs more power. It moved the powerband up a tad too, but that could be in part to the headers and exhaust.
My computer loves it. NO codes whatsoever. I had to run about 12 degrees of timing as there was a little choppyness around 6 or 8. Nothing major, but there was no real power difference, and 12 idles just as good as stock. A professional hands on tune is sure to find a little more power, but don't waste your time with an off the shelf chip. Do it right or don't bother.

Great answers here by the way for those who took the time to give them. I am thinking about doing a cam upgrade to my stock L98 also - this very helpful. What about the TPIS zz-9 cam?

I am running that set up too ...I got a bit bigger intake though . Mine idles at 900 with the stock 305 bin LOL . I too got the Lt4 springs SD1007 . With the gear swap 3.08-3.73 ...it reallly is a strong runner now! I plan on tuneing it though .....
ZZ4 is a nice cam

Thanks for the replys guys, most helpfull
So i might get my stock heads ported a bit, new Springs etc. then wack in a zz4. as the cheaper option before i go crazy.
I just got new headers and a 3" ss exhaust too so it should boogy. Do you think it would run low 13's?

I am running LT4 springs on my ZZ4 cam. That is what comes stock on the ZZ4 create engine. Here are the part numbers you need:
LT4 valve spring kit (16 springs): 12495494
LT4 Valve Spring Shim (10 shims, so order two): 10212809
LT4 retainer kit (16 retainers): 12495492
LT4 lock kit: 12495503

...and with any porting, PLUS a cam, you'll really need a tune to take advantage of the work.

...and one more thing. For the love of F-bodies, since our cars are so old, take off the heads and have'm cleaned too. I didn't rebuild the heads myself, so my machine shop guy took care of it all, but you can technically do the springs in the driveway. I figure since the intake and the valve covers are off, what's a set of headbolts. Might as well take'em off and have'm cleaned up real nice.
I painted mine while I was at it too!

yeh good point. ive got a 3.27 rear and great air and traction at our local strip.... as for driving ????
Also just got a new kn airfilter so a cold air intake will be on the adjenda. I think im running about 102 mph on a local back road 1/4 but it could be a bit rough. no idea what time.

I picked up a brand new pullout cam on Ebay for $100. Many people pull the cam out of the create engine's so you can picked up a new cam for relatively cheap.

I expect to get high 13's with mine ....after tuneing it . With the stock 305 bin ...I ran a 14.4@95 but that was with a 225 lb buddy in the car , 235 /60/15 bald tires .....and I didnt launch it good at all
so high 13's seem realistic.
