Which coil? Crane or MSD?

My current coil is quitting on me. The spark is pretty weak, nice yellow color. So its time for a new one, why go factory when you can get something better.

Both coils are about the same price, but i can't find specs on them at all. Just that it delivers a better spark than the stock coil. That much I figured out. But I would like to know the complete specs before laying out cash.

Anyone have the specs on these two coils? They are listed on the thunder website.

PN: 40-730-0491 for the Crane fireball, $55

PN: 17-8226 for the MSD coil, $45

$10 doesn't make much difference to me. If I had the specs voltage/amp/ohms stuff like that I could decide on, but they don't list anything.

EDIT: Found some specs on summit. The Part #'s are MSD-8826, and CRN-730-0491.

I found some incomplete specs for both, but its still a bit confusing. Anyone care to shed some light based on the info summit provides?

Are you still using the factory ignition ?? and just replacing the coil??
If you are you should up grade the ignition along with the coil that is where a huge difference in spark is going to be made..

The coil is going, the cap/rotor/wires/plugs already were done about 2 months ago.

The coil is shot, the spark is weak. The arc is yellowish in color.

Just need information on the coil. Nothing else that costs money please. I still have to do brakes all around on this car including new soft lines.

I'm putting enough money into it already.

I replaced my coil with a blaster coil. Had it for about a year and it is taking a dump on me. I also put one in my other car, it lasted 3 days before it quit on me. Atleast MSD gave me another one for free though.

Well I am using a Msd Blaster3 as well with a crane Hi 6 ignition that happens to shoot a dark blue spark that crackles and jumps across up to 4 inches...

I had an MSD coil in mine but didn't really do anything special. I later swapped to the Fire Ignition C-4 coil and it is a much better coil than the MSD HEI Coil, IMO. The coil works to its full potential with a Jacobs Ignition but even without it is an improvement over the factory.

Same here, I ran an MSD replacement coil on my '88 TPI and after two years it was arcing like crazy. Still started and ran OK, I just happened to notice it while checking the trans fluid level at night.

I swapped to a new Delco coil, no further issues and the guy who bought my setup is still running it.

I have an Accel Supercoil and have no complaints. Can't say I noticed a huge difference, but that's because my coil wire was rusted on the distributor end. Replaced that and the plug wires with MSD 8.5s and the car felt much better, though I attribute most of that to the rusted wire and properly gapped plugs, not the new wires for the plugs.

But I have the stock coil laying around if you wanted that for now Bill. Then you could just save up and buy an MSD 6AL or Crane Hi6 and coil at the same time. I had an MSD 6AL but needed the money so never got a chance to install it I *did* have a 6AL/Blaster2 setup in my previous car, and even though it was a crappy Dodge Shadow with a 2.5L...it did make a definite difference in smoothness. Bought it in the car and took it out to make some money.

Have used the MSD HEI coil many times. MANY times. It won't give a spark that is any hotter than stock. It will set no world records for voltage or total spark energy.

HOWEVER..... that sucker will RPM like crazy. It takes about 1/2 the time for the MSD coil to reach saturation (full energy) as it does for a stock coil. Where stock coils are notorious for "falling off" over 4500 the MSD will spin higher than your engine ever will.

I can not report any coil failures in less than about 2 years of use with an MSD. That's certainly not as reliable as most stock coils, but then again, I don't use them on stock engines or drive under stock-type conditions usually. I beat the snot outta them. So popping a coil every few years doesn't cause me much concern.

If you're building for under-5500 RPMs it's probably not the best choice. If you plan on getting some RPMs out of the motor, it's my go-to coil, hands down.

Currently with all the mods, it has a AS&M Semi-Siamesed runner intake on top. Ported/siamesed plenum, and a port matched base.

I have a LT1 intake thats partially converted laying around that is going on sometime in January. So it'll rev to about 6,000rpm or so. I"m staying with a mild cam, I like gas mileage and the LT1 intake will flow plenty.
