failed emissions
i have an 87 t/a 305tpi i took it in to get aircared(emission test) and i failed. heres teh readins- hydrocarbons-314 max allowable 189. carbon monoxide-7.24 max alowable 1.26. oxides of nitrogen i passed with flying colours on. i used methel hydrate to help pass but it didnt pass. so what can i do to help it pass next time...the engine has 261,000Kilometers or 150,000miles.

My CO readings were 44.6gpm the first time I went, the limit was 15.0gpm. My HCs were a 2.34gpm at a limit of .80gpm.
After a new catalytic converter, new plug wires, and re-gapped spark plugs, my COs hit the floor at 0.1gpm and my HCs went to .98gpm.
I have one last chance to pass before going for a visual (which I should pass) and I'm going to change my oil (its been almost 4k miles!!! ), new spark plugs, new O2 sensor, and mess with timing along with some alcohol in the gas...

Do you have a heated O2 sensor? You should look into one if none of the cheaper ways work. I also heard about one guy stuffing rags up his tail pipes to apss emissions, but ofr some reason I dont reccomend it LOL.

yeah i was kinda figureing it was the cat, i just hoped it wasnt, and it probably is the original one but it has a breather coning out of it and goin up into the engine bay, something i had never seen before. as for the heated o2 sensor i dont know if it is, but ill look into one cuz it wont hurt to replace that as well. i was also gonna do the plugs and wires, but i attempted to take one plug out and it was a pain the *** to do from above, so im thinkin they have to be done from under neath the car. i just changed the oil on it too, the oil that came out was sick looking.
also i about sticking rags in the tail pipe, i dont think im gonna attemp tthat one haha.

Cat isn't that bad to replace. I bought one for $112 off eBay. It was a Catco 3" hi-flow model, direct fit for our cars (don't buy the cheap $40 ones unless you have access to a welder).
It took me a couple hours with a can of PB Blaster, a hacksaw, a screwdriver, hammer, various sockets, and a bloody 1/4"-deep puncture wound.
Not so bad..
Spark plugs aren't bad either. I did plugs and wires on my car in a Saturday afternoon (and that's making my own wires by measuring 2-3 times and then cutting and crimping). With stock wires it would've been easy to just do the plugs but because I used MSD wires, they seemed much harder to clip on.
Definitely change the plugs if they are original too. Mine were and ruined emissions and hurt power (I know this because of how much better it was/felt afterwards). I made the mistake of just re-gapping the stock plugs, but this weekend I'm going to replace them with new AC-Delcos along with a fresh oil change and O2 sensor.
