Vector's twin turbo TPI engine

Remember the Vector from the early 90's? I do, and I always knew that they used twin turbo chevy small blocks, but I didn't know they were TPI! Or at least a TPI derivative. It actually sort of like the old First Injection setup. Check it out.

you're if you're going to pay $248,000 for something that looks as hilarious as that car, AND only run's 12.0 @ 124 mph. for that, buy yourself a viper, a nice condo on miami beach, and 3 hot girlfriends that all sleep with you on the same bed

That is a FIRST injection setup.. You can see the separated runners, and the plate on the side of the plenum near the throttle body that allowed you to mount the throttle body on the side.

We're talking 1991 here. It was faster than anything else available back then. Countaches didn't go that fast, and neither did Testerossas. This car was the "new benchmark" for the time. I think the styling was too bad either, at least not for 1991. I'm not saying it's worth the money in today's market, but back then things were different.

If you bought that car for that much back then, you would have kicked your own @$$ 2 years later! The Viper came out in '93, at a sticker of I think $60K ( maybe less) The Viper was just as fast and nicer than this thing!

just as fast? I'll admit you could get a much cheaper viper and it would look a HELL OF ALOT better, and you could mod it some and make it just as fast. But a 400hp '93 viper RT/10 would not TOUCH a 12.0 at 124mph. take the vector and throw some slicks and some gears in it and cut some low 11's and have everyone at the track go

The viper had less HP (400) and had a 0-60 of 4.6 sec and a 1/4 Mile Time of 12.9 sec @ 113.8 mph. Granted that the Viper is .9 seconds slower, It was also $50,000 in 1993!

that was a vector w8, i had a poster of the w2 on my wall from the early eighties. I always thought it was a great looking bad *** AMERICAN car. it whupped all other exotics back then. it would top 200mph long before just about everybody else. A few notes, it wasn't built for dragracing. it had an eldorado fwd tranny (3 speed) the et's weren't great but look at the trap speed! Gerald Weigart never got the funding to really make the car a success but he tried for many years. It used aerospace construction techniques, composites , i believe stressed skin. it had AC tape gauges. mid engine, the shifter was on the left of the driver. i think the engine was a donovan alluminum 6.0 liter SBC. Anyhow, it never really took off, but it was way ahead of its time.

Re: Vector's twin turbo TPI engine

I found this and just wanted to update for completeness. Realize it's 16 year's old.

The Vector W8 had a 625hp @ 5,700 RPM; 649 ft lbs @ 4,900 RPM 6.0 Liter Rodeck Aluminum block SBC engine. Twin turbocharged and intercooled @ 8 PSI.
TRW forged pistons
Carrillo stainless connecting rods
Forged Crank (obviously)
3 Stage dry sump
Turbos were Garret turbos; no idea which model

0-60 claimed 3.9 seconds
Top speed claimed 242 mph but based only upon weight, drag, engine dyno + gearing.

The W2 prototype was created in 1978. Insane look for that day and age of automobiles.

Re: Vector's twin turbo TPI engine

In the late 80s early 90s I worked 1 mile from their HQ in Wilmington, CA. We shared the same on-ramp to the freeway. That on-ramp was long and straight and they used it for short test runs. One day I had left work and was getting on to the on ramp with my fairly built Mustang 5.0. Just ahead of me a primer grey WS6 got one. I knew he was going to hit it so I stayed right up on him until he did. As soon as I saw his back end drop a tick and two puff/swirls of fuel rich exhaust, I did everything I could yet I clearly remember the Vector accelerating away from me at a frantic pace and leaving me waaaay behind. It was like I wasn't accelerating, but I was on it. He got off at the next exit and headed back to their shop. Impressive cars.

Re: Vector's twin turbo TPI engine

And for completeness: Depending upon how you count, the Vector W8 with it's twin turbo charged FIRST intake may have been the fastest car in the world for a few months in 2009!

Picture of the Engine Bay of a Vector W8 showing a polished plenum FIRST intake from Doug Demuro's video:

That is the wildest intake I've ever seen on a SBC. Is the lower just a tunnel ram design?
