LT1 vs. TPI throttle body

I did a search and found that the differences between the LT1 and TPI throttle bodies are the IAC & TPS connectors and the throttle linkage. My question is with the throttle linkage. I know that there were 2 different throttle setups on the TPI cars, the standard "early" one, and the nautilus style on the late TPIs. Does the LT1 use the same setup as the late TPI throttle bodies used, or is it different from both TPI styles?

The throttle body on my 91 Corvette is shot, and finding a used Lt1 throttle body is a hell of a lot easier than finding a used late-style TPI throttle body.

The LT1 throttle cable and throttle cable bracket is totally differant from any TPI cable or bracket.

Have you seen the ones on the Caprice cars? I was looking at one the other day, and it would work with an 89+ cable

Yeah. You could use a 89+ cable on that TB.

Hey Jim, I have the original 48mm TB off my 91 L98, only thing is its missing the piece off the bottom where the coolant flows through since my BBK didnt come with one. If you are interested let me know, without it being a complete piece the odds of selling it are small, and i have no use for it (in other words its yours dirt cheap if you want it) Also how does a throttle body go bad???? Doesnt really seem like anything to go wrong on them.

The tb sticks a little bit, presumably because either the shaft the butterflies are on is worn, or because the hole the shaft rides in is worn. Either way, with the car not running it feels fine, but with it running it gets notchy. Oiling it makes it go away for a few days, then comes right back. I'm also getting a massive dead-spot in the throttle, which seems to lessen when I lube the TB. Either way, I've got to replace it.

How cheap is dirt cheap? I assume it's in good shape, nice and clean? Since this is going on my Vette, it's got to look like new.

Thanks.

Synapsis, Chris' throttle cable & bracket looks like a Lokar to me.

Well, I went and dug it out of the garage and its grimey as hell. It is basically just dirty and oily and im sure it could be cleaned. As far as price goes, if you want to clean it yourself I'll throw it in a box and send it to you. If you dont want to use it just send it back, and if you do use it all i ask is that you take the old one and send it back to me. I have a superram that needs some machine work and it might be handy to have one for mockup purposes.

If you want it clean up front i will clean it and try to track down a digital camera and post some pics. In that case probably like 20 or 25 shipped.

Also the top plate on it looks like crap due to an old paintjob i did on it so i will just keep that and you can re-use yours. And just a warning like i said you would need to re-use your bottom piece and when i swapped that onto my new TB it was a huge PITA cause no one could find me a gasket for it, after attemping a few DIY gaskets I just ended up doin a quick DIY coolant bypass.

Are you willing to sell it without me sending my old one to you? The one on the car now is a TPIS 52mm, and I'd like to repair it. I just need something to use until I find time to do that. I have the stock 48mm off my IROC that I'd send to you, but that's the old style with the different IAC passage and different throttle linkage.

I'd be happy to pay $20 or $25 as long as you don't need a throttle body back.

Like I said I would like to have one for future purposes but it will never go on the car itself again so if its the old style one I really dont care. Also are you sure the IAC passage is different? When I got my BBK off eBay I thought it was an old style one because the throttle linkage was different, but the bottom piece seemed to match up ok, and it works fine. Instead of having the piece where the cabble wraps around and hooks in, it just had another little *** like what the cruise attaches to down on the bottom. All i did is pop that *** off there and find a bolt that fit through the hole. Then cut a groove in the bolt big enough to slip the throttle cable in. Put the cable in the groove and pull it tight then tighten it down with a nut. This is not the ultimate sollution since it pinches the throttle cable but it works, so maybe you could just do that until you can get it fixed.

The old throttle body had the IAC passage in the center, below the 2 main butterfly holes. Likewise, there was a triangular hole in the plenum for it. The newer throttle bodies dump the IAC air right into the main butterfly passages. The older TB needs to be modified so that its iac air will work with a newer plenum. But, if you don't mind getting that old one, I could send it to you. It also doesn't have the coolant passage (just like yours), nor does it have the IAC or TPS. It works well though.

Jim, im sure you probably wanna get the vette goin asap so drop me an email with your address and ill get her out to you right away. I was thinkin about it and i dont necessarily need a replacement TB i guess, so as far as payment whatever is easiest for you. Either drop me the old throttle boddy or a 20 spot when the new one gets there.

See why can't anyone offer me deals like that? I've been looking for a cheap late-style stock TB for about 3 weeks and can't find one anywhere.

Jim if it's not pretty enough for you send it to me and I'll pay the man.

Email sent. Thanks man!

GreatJ, If I manage to fix my TPIS, I'll send this one on to you for $15. How's that for a good deal?

That's not a good deal. That's an excellent deal. If I don't find one between now and then (yeah...that seems likely) I'll jump all over it. :hail:
